New Roses: Many Try
But Few Are Chosen

To the best of our knowledge
he never got around to kissing
the blarney stone. He didn’t
need to. No wearer of the green,
where the river Shannon flows,
can top Callie’s blarney where
the Neuse and Trent join hands.
Like any other tnie son of
Erin, he is not one to hold
himself in low esteem. Ihe guy
thinks he is weU versed in the
realm of sports, and his
assumption is completely
justified.
His knowledge is abundant,
his memory keen, and his en
thusiasm inexhaustible. Every
fan we’ve ever encountered
considers himself an expert, but
Newman, to a marked de^ee,
does know sports.
It is debatable whether the
fan with superior knowledge
enjoys a ball game more than
those less informed. Some of the
most rabid followers of sports
events are blissfully unaware of
what it’s all about.
Baseball is a good example. A
runner who is thrown out by a
country mUe at second may be
booed for trying to steal, when
actually the guilty party is a
batter who didn’t catch the hit
and run signal.
Whether it be music, sports,
art, or what have you, it doesn’t
hurt to improve your
knowledge, if you’re going to be
seriously involved. Sports, in
Callie’s case, take top priority
the year round.
Like Burke Taylor and the
late Nicky Simpson, and of
course there are others, his
tireless efforts through the
years to improve and expand
athletic facilities at New Bern
Hi^ school should be forever
remembered.
Sports on every level are his
ciQ) of tea, but to him the
Atlantic Coast Basketball
Tournament is extra special.
The closest thing to heaven on
earth.

Selections” was organ
ized 34 years ago and
continues with no depar
ture from its rigid,
unbiased appraisal of all
new rose selections
submitted to it for
testing.
Very briefly, AARS
maintains, at this time,
22 official test gardens
scattered throughout the
United States. These
trial grounds are located
so'that all types of soil
and climate. In areas
where roses are gen
erally grown, are
represented.
Any rose breeder may
submit a selection for
testing but It must be
remembered that the
competition Is fierce, the
testing cruelly impartial
and the chances of an
award are slim. To be a
winner, a new rose must
be outstanding In every

With this background
of information about the
modus operand t of AARS,
we announce the All-
America winners for
1973 — ELECTRON,
GYPSY and MEDALLION.
We also announced these
varieties In June, but I
will have more to say
about them this time and
to tell you that they should
be available now from
your supplier. All are
hybrid teas.
ELECTRON has a
bright pink beautifully
shaped bloom with what,
for the want of a better
descriptive phrase,
might be called a sort
of neon glow. The

seem to stand out from
other blooms around
them as though lighted
from within. The flowers
are large, fully double
and very fragrant.
Electron is classed as
a bushy grower well
covered with dark green
foliage. It should prove
to be a most decorative
garden variety due to the
shapeliness of the plant
and Its ability to produce
quantities of exhibition
flowers throughout the
growing season.
This variety Is new
to the American public
but has been grown In
Europe under another
name. It has won nine
awards In Great Britain,
Spain, Holland, Belgium,
Scandanavla, Germany
and Austria.
