Friday, June 22, 1973 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Page Seven Washington Report .By — CONGRESSMAN WALTER B. JONES economy, environment, foreign policy, nealth, the energy crisis and the general welfare—it is certainly most important that the preoccupation with im peachment does not hinder the capability of the Congress to act on these vital issues. Probably the most important news coming out of Washington last week was the Presidential announcement of a 60-day freeze on food prices at the second level. This means that prices off the farm are not controlled by the freeze, but the wholesaler and the distributor will be affected by the freeze, which obviously in turn will t«d to reduce the price the farmer receives. Again, I am convinced that imposing controls on a part of the economy, whUe ignoring other parts produces only partial results. I remain convinced that the only solution to fighting the run away inflation is the complete freeze, not only on prices, but wages, interest, rents and all goods and services. In House action, once again we had the controversial public debt limit. This is a matter which comes before the Congress at regular intervals, sometimes as often as twice a year. Under present law, it is necessary to approve toe debt ceiling in order that govern ment might continue to operate and pay its debts. In recent years, most of toe North Carolina ddegation has regularly voted against any increase or extension of toe debt ceiling, and the same was true last week, with Congressman Andrews, Pryer and Martin voting to extend the debt ceiling, while the rest of toe delegation voted no. On Thursday, June 14, I had the pleasure of visiting Cherry Point and participating in toe dedication of a new aircraft stripping and corrosion treatment hanger, constructed at a cost of $5^,000. Ibis, I believe, is an in dication that the former threat to close or phase out tte NARF operation at Cherry Point has now diminished. It is difficult to measure in dollars and cents what this large employment of our civilian population means to the economy of many of the counties of toe First District, and of course, efforts will remain constant to insure its continuation. The talk of Presidential impeachment .especially on toe Floor of the House, continues to gain momentum. However, PIANOS & ORGANS SAVE BIG WITH BALDWIN DIRECT FACTORY FINANCING. JONES-POTTS MUSIC COMPANY 777 Middle St. many Members feel that con sideration of impeachment is both inappropriate and un timely. For, unless evidence to the contrary is presented, and such evidence is processed through our iniform Judicial system, impeachment at this time is not an immediate prospect.
