mi Friday, November 9, 1973 t,x\ AND Blossoms MAMIE MILLER “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path/’ More and more people are getting interested in herbs each year. TTiey are interested for their beauty, and the flavor and food and medicine. Today we are discovering that many plants we always considered to be flowers are also edible. Violets, dandelions, rose hips, and nasturtiums, for example, have food value. Plants have a lot of per sonality, and people a long time ago depended on some of them for information. Rosemary is a well respected plant, but it is sneaky because wherever it grows “Misses is Master.” Another saying is “When the dogwood flowers appear, frost will not again be here.” Maybe this is not a statement of fact that has no exception, but the saying does hold true almost every year. When you consider fall plantings include catoneaster, sedum-acre, and stonecrop or sedum-sieboldi. These make excellent carpets in dry and sandy soil. Nothing is sweeter than fruitland elalagnus and garland daphne. Plant them near windows or doorways, so you may enjoy the delightful odors. These are easy to root. Now is a good time to put out cuttings. Put pine straw, ground com cobs, pine bark around shrubs and plants for winter protec tion. These are also good to control weeds. For this week’s Buds and Blossoms poem, we turn to Edgar A. Guest and The Joy Of A Dog. Ma says no, it’s too much care An’ it will scatter germs and hair. An’ it’s a nuisance through and through. An’ barks when you don’t want it to; An’ carries dirt from off the street. An’ tracks the carpet with its feet. But it’s a sign he’s growing up When he is longin’ for a pup. Most every night he comes to me An’s climbs a-straddle of my knee An’ starts to fondle me an’ pet. Then asks me if I’ve found one yet. An’masays; Now don’t tell him yes; You know they make an awful mess,” An’ starts their faults to catalogue.
