Page 2 West Craven Highlights, February 2, 1978 Letters To The Editor Dear Editor: Congratulations on your venture, a newspaper for the “Vanceboro Community.” As a former resident with kinfolk still in the community, I have interest in the area and wish you the best of luck. My only non-positive comment is of the choice of name. “West Craven” apparently comes from the name of the high school which serves the same communities as your paper. But being a Vanceboro graduate of the year B. C. (Before Consolidation), I never quite understood the picking of that name for the school either. When first hearing of the high school’s name, I was confused, since I rarely think of Craven County as having as east and west. Due to the county’s shape, most areas could be described as either north or south of New Bern. Since I was far removed from the decision making, I guessed that the school’s name was a compromise made by the county office: the school was placed on the Vanceboro side of the river, so it was named after the Dover-Jasper side. Since “West Craven” only partially describes the area served by the Vanceboro- Dover-Jasper-Fort Barnwell merger, it makes an even lesser description of the Northeastern and Northcentral portion referred to as the “Vanceboro Community.” West Craven much more closely describes the other side of the river. Northcentral or Northeastern Craven is quite a mouthful, so I feel that “North Craven” would be a better indication of the service area. So much for an opinion. I enjoyed your first issue and hope that they continue. Your Uncle’s Former Classmate, Hal Smith THE WEST CRAVEN HIGHLIGHTS welcomes contributions and letters to the editor.
