Scouts & Parents Honored at
Annual Blue and Gold Banquet
About one hundred fifty Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, parents, leaders, and Special guests
enjoyed a delicious meal and saw the Scouts receive praise for the progress they had
made during the year in the Scouting program at the Annual Blue and Gold Banquet
held in the Farm Life Elementary School Cafeteria. Receiving Awards were Scouts
from Cub Scout Pack 58 and Boy Scout Troop 58 of Vanceboro. Scouts in Den 1 of Pack
58 opened the banquet with a flag ceremony. Rev. Ron Chapman of the Vanceboro
Christian Church gave the invocation. The Christian Church sponsors Pack 58. Mr.
William Haddock, Cubmaster of Pack 58 welcomed everyone to the banquet. He
remarked that his was on of the largest groups he had seen at the banquet in some
time. He introduced Mr. John Bush, District Scout Representative. Mr. Bush
entertained the group with an interesting and meaningful story then led the Scouts in a
cheer. The Webelos Den presented a short skit. Webelos is the highest rank a Cub
Scout can receive before going into a troop. Awards were then presented first to the
Cub Scouts by Mr. Haddock. Cub Scouts receiving awards were as follows:

Mr. R.L. Cannon, Jr. Scoutmaster, presented awards to the members of Boy Scout
Troop 58.
The following Advancement Progress Awards were given to Boy Scouts at the Blue
and Gold Banquet. These were earned during the last year. Scout, Mike Benton;
Tenderfoot, Johnnie Clark, Stacy Lee, Mike Hodges, Guy Wade; Second Class, Guy
Wade, Stacy Lee; First Class, Jay Huff, Clif Bright; Star, Jay Huff.
These Merit Badges were earned during the year by the following scouts: Keith
Cannon, Orienteering, Small Boat Sailing, Rowing, Personal Management, and Camping.
Clif Bright, Citizenship in the Community, First Aid, Canoeing, Lifesaving. John Drake,
Salesmanship, Leatherwork, Basketry. Andrew Copeland, Aviation, Leatherwork, First
Aid. Scott Gladson, Orienteering, Camping, Sports. Johnny Clark, Cooking, Basketry.
Stacy Lee, Sports, salesmanship. Home Repairs, Scholarship, Reading, Coin Collecting,
Personal Management. Guy Wade, Basketry, Fishing. Jay Huff, Scholarship, Citizenship
in the Community, First Aid, Personal Management, Lifesaving, Environmental Science.
Mike Benton, Farm Mechanics, Basketry, Richard DaU, Forestry, Citizenship in the
Community.
Mr. Cannon recognized the Rotarians as special guests of Troop 58. The Rotary Club of
Vanceboro sponsors Troop 58. The Troop Committee consists of Donald Witherington,
Chairman; Jimmie Morris, Alton Whitley, Abe Cleve, and Webster
Butler. Mr. Cannon expressed his appreciation to his two Assistant Scoutmasters,
Richard Bowers and Lee Johnson. This past year, Mr. Bowers was inducted into the
Orderof the Arrow, the brotherhood of expert campers. Mr. Johnson led the Scouts on
a canoe exp«ditio!U.d(iLwn Swift C^eek. Mr. Cannon «lso recognized Glen» Forest, and
Scott Gladson, Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, respectively.
Scott Gladson and Jay Huff were also inducted into Order of the Arrow. Mr. Cannon
told of some of the experiences he and Clif Bright had at the National Boy Scout
Jamboree held last summer in Pennsylvania.
Den 2 presented a closing ceremony. Rev. Claude Wilson of the Vanceboro United
Methodist Church gave the benediction.
