Marietta Irene Townsend
has been named a Charles A.
Dana Scholar for 1978-79.
Marietta is a rising sopho
more at Agnes Scott College
in Decatur, Georgia where
she is majoring in French
and Political Science. She is
also a member of the Black
Friars, a drama society at
Agnes Scott. Marietta grad
uated from St. Catherine’s
School in Richmond, Va.
where she was very active in
drama and music. While at
St. Catherine’s, she was a
member of the National Per
forming and Visual Arts
Sbciety. She earned the
Music Award and the Drama
Award for her excellence in
her studies. The Charles A.
Dana Scholarship Program
was e'^'^blished by the
Charles A. Dana Founda
tion. Charles A. Dana was
editor for many years of the
New York Sun. The basis for
selection of Dana Scholars
includes academic promise
and achievement and lea
dership potential. In each of
the colleges and universities
with Dana Scholars’ pro
grams, an effort is made to
develop a sense of leader
ship and unity among the
scholars will serve as an
example and inspiration to
other students affecting
favorably the total quality of

the daughter of Rev. and
Mrs. Kenneth Townsend of
Vanceboro, NC. Rev. Town

cord total of 2,872 gra
duates receiving degrees
during the school’s 60th
Commencement this
month.
The 1978 total included
more than 2,000 under
graduates degrees for
which work was completed
during the summer, fall
and spring semesters.
Nearly 900 graduate de
grees were conferred.

^ SEATS BELTS COULD HAVE PREVENTED TRAGEDY-The car leaving the parking
^ lot of the United Tabernacle Holiness Church operated by Mrs. Bertha Mae Fornes was
struck by a car driven by Miss Rene Wilson of Greenville, N.C. last Sunday. Both cars
were a total loss. Mrs. Fornes and her husband Charlie were thrown from the car on
impact.
Bike-A-Thon
collections
exceed ^1200
Vanceboro, NC—Butch
White, chairman of the
Vanceboro Bike-A-Thon for
Cystic Fibrosis, announced
that the participants had
turned in $1236.25 from
pledges made during the
1978 Bike-A-Thon for Cystic
Fibrosis held last Saturday,
May 27.
Individuals with the most
collections won prizes for
their acheivements. First
place prize, a ten-speed
Schwinn bicycle, went to
Eiaine Moore who collected
$201.50. John Drake won a
brand new skateboard for
collecting the second highest
amount, $185. Third place in
collections was "Taylor in
the AM’’ who collected
$115.50.
"I was really very pleased
with the great generosity of
the people of Vanceboro and
the surrounding areas in
their support of this cause,’’
White commented after the
tally had been made. “We
have a few more pledges still
to come in,” he added. Rev.
Ron Chapman, pastor of the
Vanceboro Christian Church
who assisted Butch in the
fund raising event had
nothing but praise for all the
people who supported the
event.
Rev. Chapman thanked,
first of all, the merchants
who made donations. These
merchants were Kite’s
Supermarket, Cannon’s
Variety Store, Powell Bro
thers Hardware, and Wes
tern Auto (Associate Store).
A special thanks went to the
Christian Church Mens’ Fel
lowship and Youth Fellow
ship for their donations and
refreshments for the riders.
Rev. Chapman thanked
Vanceboro Police Chief Har
ley F. Ringer for designing
the course and looking after
the safety of the partici
pants. A very special thanks
went to Steven in the Morn
ing and Taylor in the AM
and the entire WSFL-FM
staff for their support of the
event. Finally, Rev. Chap
man thanked all the partici
pants and donors regardless
of the size of the gift, since
^each gift will gp toward a big
cause. Butch White added
that gifts and donations are
still being taken for the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

respectively in individual collections stand proudly with
their prizes. Bike-A-Thon chairman Butch White announc
ed that collections from pledges totalled over $1200 for the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
