1 THE WEST CRAVEN ) HIGHUGHT Rotarians hear Davis Vanceboro, N.C.--L. Doug las Davis, newly appointed campaign chairman for the 1978-79 United Way fund raising drive, spoke to the Vanceboro Rotary Club at their regular Thursday night meeting. Davis dis cussed a few of the projects the United Way of Craven County helps sponsor. He explained that the name of the organization was chang ed from the United Way of New Bern emphasizing its broader coverage both in soliciting and disbursing funds. Davis went on to explain that 89 cents of every dollar collected goes to the agencies being fund ed while only 11 cents' goes for administrative pur- L. Douglas Davis poses. He did indicate that some of the money disburs ed to the agencies is some times used for administra tive purposes within that agmicy. Davis followed up his comments with a short tape and slide presentation which further highlighted the United Way program. Davis was assisted by Mr. Jeff Vaughn, a fellow volun teer, and Mrs. Linda Rus sell. Linda is the mother of Craven County’s Little Miss United Way, Kristie. In addition to these visi tors, the club welcomed Thomas Thompson, the Executive Director of the Craven County Industrial Development Commission. Following the meeting, Mr. Thompson discussed a pro posal for getting industry to locate in the Vanceboro area with some of the in terested Rotarians. NEW POLICE OFFICER - Stanley Kite of Vanceboro, is sworn in as Vanceboro’s new part time police officer by Mayor Jimmie Morris in ceremonies last Monday. Looking on is Police Chief Harley F. Ringer. Kite has completed seventy three hours toward his associate degree in criminal justice at Craven Community College. (Photo by Rick Cannon) Coward family reunion The family of the late Amos Coward and Bettie Dixon Coward celebrated their family reunion Satur day, September 9, at the Ramada Inn in New Bern. Mrs. Callie Coward Daughtry, the daughter of the late Owen Coward was in charge of the event and she thanked the family friends for their atten dance. Craig Daughtry, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Daughtry, read a poem he wrote while he was travel ing from Charlotte to New Bern. The subject was family love. Joe S. Dawson was asked to read the Coward’s family history. Family came from four states and Washington, D.C. They were Mrs. Lily Lovick Anderson, Mrs. Gladys Rose and Thomas Farmville, Baltimore, MD.; Swindell Lovick and family, Louis Lovick and family. Miss Elsie M> Lovick and Grim Freeman from New Bern; Vine A Lovick and family from Merritt, N.C.; Thady Lovick, Vanceboro. (See Coward, Page 7) Rev. Odell Walker to hold revival Rev. F. Odell Walker of Washington will be the guest speaker for revival services that will begin at the Vanceboro United Me thodist Church Sunday, October 8-12. Rev. Walker is a grad uate of Pfeiffer College, High Point College and in 1959 he graduated from School Menus .. Page 6 Rev. OdeU Walker Duke Divinity School. He is the father of four children. He has served churches in Troy, Fayetteville, Hope Mills., Lillington, Raleigh, Goldsboro and presently is pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Wash ington. Cannon recognized for 10 years of service Vanceboro, N.C.-Richard L. Cannon, Jr. was recently recognized for 10 years of service and dedication to the Youth of North Caro lina by the North Carolina First meeting of Junior Women’s Club held by Sandra McCandless The first organizational meeting of the Vanceboro Junior Women’s Club was held Tuesday, September 19, at the Vanceboro Medi cal Center. Those attending were Mrs. Brenda Ipock, elected temporary chair man, Mrs. Sandra McCand less, temporary secretary, Mrs. Sharon Bland, Mrs. Terry Beaman and Mrs. Judy Freeman. Mrs. Car- lotta Gault and Mrs. Kathy Pike of the New Bern Jun ior Women’s Club described the organizational layout of the General Federation of Junior Women’s Clubs. They also shared some of the interesting experiences they have had through the Junior Women’s Club. The major work areas of the club include Conservation. Education, Home Life, In ternational Affairs, Public Affairs, The Arts and Com munity Life. In the Vanceboro Club special emphasis will be placed on Community Life with improvements projects for the growing Vanceboro community. The special yearly pro jects for the Federation are Child Abuse and the Abus ed Spouse. Any woman who is inte rested in becoming a Char ter Member of the Vance boro Junior Women’s Club may contact Brenda Ipock at 244-0427 after 6 p.m. or attend the second organi zational meeting October 9 at 8 p.m. at the Vanceboro Medical Center. This meeting will be the final organizational meeting in which the election’ of officers and the adoption of the club’s bylaws will take place. R.L. Cannon, Jr. Merchants Association, the North Carolina Association of Distributive Education, Teachers and the Depart ment of Public Instruction- Distributive Education Ser vices. Mr. Cannon has been a Distributive Education Co- ordiantor at Elizabeth City, Havelock and West Craven High Schools. This award is given in five year intervals. Cannon is past recipient of the D.E.C.A. Hall of Fame which is only given to D.E. Coordinators who were in the Distributive Education Program as a student.
