Especial ly do I want to gfive thanks to the three that came to my aid recently: Patsy Townsend, Joyce Toler and Mac Powell. They were alerted by George Roberts, Jr. from the Vanceboro Medical Center. One could tell they were really work ing as a team. They were •all kind, gentle and very concerned. The town has something to be proud of with this organization. They have spent many hours being trained in order to help save the lives of others. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to the many, many friends for their kindness shown to me during my stay in the hos pital and also since I have been home. Huff, Agent Phone: 244-1005 I Vanceboro, N.C.-Mrs. Lucille Stewart, Director of the Craven County Council on the Aged, spoke to the Vanceboro Rotary Club at its regular Thursday night meeting. According to Mrs. Stewart, the purpose of the Council is to coordinate the programs for the aged in Craven County and to seek ways of replacing tax-sup ported programs with volunteer and self-suppor ting programs. The Council has as one of its chief projects “Meals on Wheels" in which volunteers deliver one balanced meal per day to ten elderly persons in New Bern. The recipients pay $1.50 per meal when they can. Meals on Wheels is backed by a $5,000 grant from the Craven County Board of Commissioners. A long range goal of the Council for the Aged is the construction of a Multi- Purpose Senior Citizens Center. This center would serve as a focal point for the aged in areas of recrea tion, education, and basic services. It would allow space for other agencies which serve the aged such as the Health Department, Social Services, and the Food Stamp Program. The center could also house an adult day care center which would allow working fami lies to keep their loved ones in the home longer. At present volunteers are con ducting a house to house survey to determine the exact number of persons in Craven County who are sixty years and older and what needs they have. Plans are under way for an extension of the services to the Vanceboro area in the near future. The West Craven HIGHLIGHT r' Published every Thursday at P.O.
