Ft. Barnwell
celebrates
Fireman’s Day
9
W. M. “Zoot” Saunders,
retired Fire Marshall for
Craven County, was in
excellent form Saturday as
he recognized the over
forty-five units that made
up The Third Annual Fire
man’s Day Parade held in
Fort Barnwell.
Leading this well
organized and colorful
parade was Ms. Emmie
Dudley and her daughter,
Beth. They were riding
two beautiful horses and
carrying the U.S. and N.C.
Flags. They were followed
by West Craven High
School’s Award Winning
Marching Band.
An outstanding float in
the parade was Dover’s
Fire Department’s Float
which carried queen, Ms.
Phyllis Whitney and court,
who had raised over three
thousand dollars for the
benefit of the Dover Fire
Department.
Another attractive float
was representing Lane’s
Chapel Methodist Young
Adults. Much work and
planning went into the
building of these floats.
Fire Departments from
Vanceboro, Askin, Dover,
Jasper, New Bern, Ayden
and Grifton were repre
sented in the parade.
Rescue Squads from many
of these communities were
present.
Other attractions in the
parade were Jo Ella Riggs
and her clowns. They were
very generous with sweets
for the crowd. Jim Hines
with Smokey the Bear and
Santa Claus showed up too.
Carl Skinner, Jr. was
overall parade chairman
and had the parade well
organized. Barbecue pork
and barbecue chicken was
served to the large crowd
attending the event. The
Fort Barnwell Fire Depart
ment cooked 8 pigs which

President Carl Skinner, Jr.,
Secretary Joe Hill and
Treasurer Ray Newell.
Two highlights of the day
were: Crowning of the
Fire Queen and the Horse
Show. Excitement
mounted throughout the
day with the two contes
tants collecting votes.

dressed out to 850 pounds
and 16 crates of chicken. It
is reported they sold out of
barbecue early and had to
rely on barbecue chicken to
get through the lunch hour
rush. Mr. Leslie Heath was
in charge of cooking. All
this was sponsored by the
Fort Barnwell Fire Depart
ment which has its leader
ship Chief Frankie White,
Ass’t Chief Leslie Heath,
Capt. Jimmy Nobles, Capt.
Charles Willis, Lt. J.K.
Russell, Lt. Bill Russell, Lt.

Sewer hook-up delayed
at least two more weeks
Those two contestants were
Donna Cox and Patricia
Russell. When the votes
were counted, Patricia
Russell was declared Fort
Barnwell Fire Queen for
1978.
As usual the Horse Show
had a large attendance.
Show horses from several
communities went through
the paces of the show to
conclude the Third Annual
Fireman’s Day in Fort
Barnwell.

Vanceboro, N.C.-Mayor
Jimmie■ Morris Tcpui ted
that due to problems in
getting some pipe under
streets, hook-ups to the
new sewer system could be
delayed at least another
two to three weeks. He
made these statements at
the regular Monday night
meeting of the Vanceboro
Board of Aldermen. “I plan
to meet with the chief
engineer, Robert Pittman,
tomorrow,” Morris said,
“We will go over the
system and determine how
soon hook-ups can begin.”
Morris had spoken to
Pittman on the phone
earlier and learned that all
the lines seem to be in good
shape. Morris warned
citizens of Vanceboro to be
wary of out of town
plumbers overcharging for
the hook-ups. Alderman
Daphne Cleve recom
mended a fine be assessed
if citizens didn’t hook up
within the specified period,
however, the Board voted
to allow citizens forty-five
days to hook-up to the
sewer system. In" hooking
up to the system, each
citizen must use a special
fitting made of Neoprene
which can be purchased at
Longley Supply Company
for about $7. This fitting
must be attached after
breaking off the bell around
one end of the terra cotta
pipe the town used.
Citizens must use ABS
black sewer line four inches
in diameter. Either of two
weights may be used, but
the stronger weight, 140 lb.
pressure, is recommended.
Further explanation of the
hook up procedure will
appear in later issues of
The Highlights. The sewer
bill will run 1.6 times the
water bill.
Morris reported that the
Safety Inspector had
condemned the playground
equipment at the
Vanceboro Elementary
School as unsafe for the
children. The PTA, which
owns the equipment, has
rreed to donate the
equipment to the town for
the new Town Park.
In other action, the
Vanceboro Board of
Aldermen passed a resolu
tion adopting rules, policies,
and guidelines for mutual
assistance between the
Vanceboro Police Depart
ment and other county and
municipal departments in
Craven County and the
State of North Carolina.
The resolution allows the
Chief of Police of the
Vanceboro Police Depart
ment, with the authoriza
tion of the Police
Commissioner, to provide
temporary assistance to
any Sheriffs Department,
county Police Department
or municipal Police Depart
ment in North Carolina
while still maintain the
same personnel rights of
his own agency. For
instance, he is entitled to
workmen’s compensation
and the same benefits as
though he were functioning
within his normal scope of
duties.
