C. - Thursdoy, November 16, 1978 12 Pages Price: 20c Haddock honored Cubmaster William Haddock was honored at November Pack meeting, upon his retirement, for 15 years of service to Pack 58. On November 10, 1978 Pack 58 held it’s monthly Pack meeting at Vanceboro Christian Church. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a Cub Scout’s Prayer led by Rusty Norris of 'Den 1. Den 2 Cubs showed their volcano experiment and log bird feeders, pro jects they had worked on during their den meetings. Linda Thomas presented Denner cord to Kevin Whitford and Assistant Denner Cord to Allen Thomas. The following awards were presented by Cubmaster William Haddock: Summertime award pins were presented to the fol lowing boys for attending at least 3 summer meet ings: Doug Lee, Travis Wetherington, Scott Willis, Kendall Gaskins, Allen thomas. Brad White, Chris ^||tin, Keith Allen Morris, jAmie Gladson, Jimmy Haddock, Dean Broadway, Neal Russell, Jay Gaskins, Billy Morris, Stacey Patterson, and Clay McOmber. Bobcat Pin and Badge were presented to Kendall Gaskins, Rusty Norris, and Dean Broadway. Brad White and Billy Morris received their Wolf Badge. Jay Gaskins received 2 sil ver wolf arrows. Richie Gladson, Hurley Tripp and Neal Russell received one silver wolf arrow. Hurley TjjijM, Travis Wethering- tljpnd Keith Allen Morris received their Bear Badge. Allen Thomas received his Bear Badge and gold arrow. Kevin Whitford and Stacey Patterson received their By Linda Lee Bear Badge and one gold and one silver arrow. The following Webelos received badges also: Doug Lee--Webelos Award, Aquanaut, Artist, Engi neer, Traveler, Scientist, and Geologist. Clay McOmber-Aquanaut, Forester, Naturalist, Artist, Scientist, and Geologist. Travis Wetherington- Aquanaut, Athlete, Scien tist, and Geologist. Chris Martin-Aquanaut, Athlete. Jimmy Haddock-Aquanaut, Artist, Naturalist, Scientist, and Geologist. Keith Morris-'Scientist and Geologist. Jerry Morris- Scientist and Geologist. Scott Willis-Scientist. The Webelos Den and Den Chief, Stacy Lee, had a candlelight ceremony for graduating Webelos Jerry Morris, Clay McOmber, and Jimmy Haddock. These three Webelos earned and received the highest rank of Cub Scouting-The Arrow of Light. Scoutmaster Richard Cannon received the three Webelos into Scouting. For 15 years of devotion and hard work, William and Ann Haddock were honored with gifts and a reception following the Pack meeting. William received an en graved pen and pencil set, while his wife, Ann, received a soup tureen. Refreshments of cake, potato chips, nuts, corn candy and lemonade were served by Myrt Morris and Annette Martin. Pack 58 is proud to have Ron Chapman as its new Cubmaster. Mr. Chapman will be working with Den Leaders Linda Thomas, Doris White, Linda Lee, and Colleen Gaskins in assuming his duties as Cubmaster. Dr. Dostor to speak at Kitt Swamp THIRTY YEARS OF SCOUTING-R. L. Cannon, Jr. [left], Scoutmaster of Troop 58 and William Haddock, Cubmaster of Pack 58. Mr. Haddock retired Friday night after over fifteen years of service to the boys of the Vanceboro area. Cannon has been scoutmaster for over thirteen years. Dr. Harold C. Doster, President of Atlantic Chris tian College, will be the guest speaker at Kitt Swamp Christian Church in Askin on Saturday, Nov. 18 at a prayer supper beginn ing at 6 p.m. The public is cordially invited to this very special service. When the trustees of Atlantic Christian College, a church-related college in Wilson, offered the respon sibilities of the presidency in the summer of 1977, it was fitting that they were entrusting leadership of the institution to a man who has long recognized the value of Christian education. Dr. Doster came to Atlantic Christian from Cluver-Stockton in Canton, Mo., a church related insti tution, which he had served as president from July 1, 1973 until assuming his present position. As ordained minister in the Christian Church, Dr. Doster is a member of the Regional Board of the Christian Church in North Carolina. Nationally, he served as a member of the executive committee of the Church Finance Council of the Christian Church and on the executive and develop ment committeees of the Board, now called the Divi sion of Higher Education of that body. He presently is chairman of the Council of Liberal Arts Colleges for this division. Dr. Doster earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan, holds a B.D. degree from Yale Univer sity and received his B.A. degree from Bethany Col lege in West Virginia. He served as a student QUICK RESPONSE-Firemen from Township 9 Fire Department respond aimost immediately to put out truck fire on Spring Garden Road. No estimates of damage were avaiiable. Truck bimis Spring Garden-Mrs. Daniel Talvocchio of Route 2, New Bern was traveling on Spring Garden Road when her truck stalled. She and her children abandoned the vehicle on the shoulder of the road as smoke billowed from under the hood. In minutes, the Township 9 Fire Department was on the scene and quickly doused the fire. Assistant Fire chief Warren Nobles, first on the scene, directed a bucket brigade which kept the blaze under con trol until other firemen arrived. The Talvocchio vehicle suffered extensive damage. Honor roll at Farm Life minister in Ohio while attending college, later was an assistant pastor and youth director in Connecti cut and served two terms as pastor of the Shade Valley Pastoral Unity of Christian Churches in Ohio, a home mission project of the Ohio Society of Chris- ian Churches. His first posi tion in higher education was as Director of Church Relations and ministerial Training at Bethany Col lege. He later served as Assistant to the President, Executive Dean and Presi dent at colleges in Kentucky, West Virginia and Missouri. Named to Outstanding Young Men of America in 1966, Dr. Doster has since been cited in Who’s Who in the East, Midwest and South, McCoy in Sno-Do by Johnny Waters Dr. Harold C. Community Leaders of America, Who’s Who in American Colleges and University Administration, Outstanding Educators of America, and most recently Who’s Who in the United States. In 1973, he granted the Alumni Achievement Award in Education by his Alma Mater, Bethany College. Dr. Doster is the father of four children. week’s paper: Averette’s 3rd Mrs. grade. Lisa McCoy, Junior Civi- tan Governor of N.C. Dis- rict East, has been invited to participate in the 4th Annual Great Canadian Challenge Sno-Do Event hosted by the Canadian West Junior Civitans. The event will be held January 21, 1979. A sno-Do event is run much like a bike-a-thon or a walk-a-thon, except that the participants ride a snow mobile over a prescribed 100 mile course. ,T^e parti-* cipants raise money by obtaining pledges for each mile they complete. Lisa is currently locked in a battle with other Junior Governors from the United States and Canada to see which district can raise the most money in pledges. All money raised will be given to the Nation al Association of Retarded Citizens and will apply towards the Junior Civitan pledge of $30,000 to be Lisa McCoy Photo by Joey Whitley used for the continuation of the NARC public Informa tion Program. ' Last year the twelve Junior Civitan Governors that took part in the “Chal lenge” raised more than $20,000.
