Page 8 The West Craven HIGHLIGHTS, January 11,1979 Cockroachea Because cockroaches are wanderers, they can carry diseases. Surprisingly, they are among the cleanest of in sects. If a roach touches a human, the first thing it does after Beeing for safety is clean itself. Keep Flour Keep a small quantity of flour in an old spice jar with a perforated top or in a salt shaker. It comes in handy for quick use to dust cake pans, coat meat or thicken gravy. On Sunday, October 8, 1978, the church held their annual homecoming. The pastor. Rev. L.B. Avery, brought the morning mes sage and was used of God to bless the hearts of all present. The church was filled with the many friends and members who had come to share in this spe cial day of activities. Dur ing the morning service a special dedication ceremony was held in praise for the work accomplished in the year. Following the lunch, the Oak Street Youth Choir from Goldsboro presented a very well-performed and spiritual concert of gospel music. This date marked the completion of a church beautification project which had been begun earlier in the fall. The outside of the church was painted; reno vation of the heating and air conditioning system was done; renewal of the public address system was com pleted; and the installation of a much larger rostrum area and a beautiful solid oak altar and kneeling pad across the front of the church was finished. His mother, Mrs. Delonia Morris, was an early mem ber of the Holly Hill Church; and Mr. Morris donated a large portion of this lovely altar in memory of his parents. A bronze plaque on the altar reads “In loving memory of Mr. and Mr. Webster Morris.” The Women’s Auxiliary of the church began a pro ject of carpeting the sanc tuary of the church and the two adjoining Sunday School classrooms hoping to complete the project by the end of 1979. However, with much hard work-the ladies making pledges and proceeds from the Bazaar- and with the help of other church members, funds were quickly raised and the project was completed in time for the 1978 Home coming Day. The church is grateful to all its friends and members who contribu ted both money and labor toward these projects. Most of all, the congregation is thankful to God for His blessings upon each effort. Pastory Avery was honored later in the year with a surprise birthday party where he received many nice gifts. Also at Christmas the parsonage family enjoyed a bounty of gifts from those who love them in this community. On December 31“in clos ing out the year 1978-the church had a special candle light worship and commun- _ ion service. This was a wonderful way to begin a new year with commit ments being made to renew dedication to God and make the new year of 1979 be the best ever.
