April 26.1979 o 8 Pages 20 Price: 20 Marching Eagles take first in Shad Fest On Saturday, April 21, the West Craven March ing Eagles traveled to Grifton to participate in the Ninth Annual Shad Festival Parade. The band was awarded the title of “Best Band,” and Mr. Joseph Sizemore, band director, accepted the trophy. “Slim Short” of Channel 9 T. V. congratu lated Mr. Sizemore on the excellent performance given by the band. Guests speakers for the occasion were Dr. Thomas Brewer, Chan cellor of East Carolina University in Greenville and Chief Edison, Mt. Pleasant Tribe Historian, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Vendrix Celebrate 40th On Saturday, April 14, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Vendrix were pleasantly surprised by tbeir children and grand children as everyone gathered to help them celebrate thier 40 years of marriage. Thinking they were to pick up an Easter present, Mr. and Mrs. Vendrix arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Sawyer. They were surprised to find the family present with cameras, gifts, and a beautiful anniversary cake. A steak dinner was served on the patio deck, followed by a cake made by Mrs. Cora Lee Wells of Burgaw as a gift to the Vendrixs. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Vendrix and sons, Scott and Chad, from Raleigh, Ernie and Joy Scott from Burgaw, and Mr. and Mrs. Chris Sawyer and son, Todd, of New Bern. A FINER TOWN — That is the goal of the citizens of Vanceboro this month. To promote this campaign, which was begun by the town board, the Junior Woman’s Club posted signs around town to encour* age everyone to make Vanceboro “a finer town” by cleaning up, fixing up and painting up. Unfortunately, due to vandalism, this sign no longer remains. from the Tuscarora Indian Reservaton in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The Marching Eagles have recently gotten brand new uniforms. They have competed in many events this year and have taken either first or second place in almost every one. In and around Ernul by Mi’^. Alnia Drake Miss Stacy Elks celebrated her third birth day Saturday, April 21 at home with a birthday party given by her parents, Mr. andMrs. Carl Lee Elks and Miss Carla Sue Elks. Delicious refreshments of chocolate marble cake, onion dip and chips,and fruit punch were enjoyed by the guests. Those attending were: Kelly Kirkman, Jane Morris, Suzanne Elks, Melisa Elks, Calvin Morris, Michelle Haddock, Ricky Haddock, Robert Morris, Iris and Willard Crain, T.J. Jones, and Mrs. Ruby Morris. RANGERETTES DISPLAY AWARD-Mtb. Thetana Whitlord and Mrs. Upai LaFever traveled to Kinston on Saturday, March 17, to receive the National Rangerette Unit of the Year Award on behalf of Girl’s Rangerette Unit # 1350 of Emnl. This gronp has earned this recognition for four years in a row. Rotary hears folk music Frank Proffitt,Jr., was the guest performer at at the Vanceboro Rotary Club meeting last Thurs day. Mr. Proffitt, who played the banjo and dul cimer, has delighted audi ences at numerous festi vals and concerts. He has performed in over 100 North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia public schools under the Blue Ridge Institute of Ferrum, VA. and N.C. Arts Council. He is the Easter Party Given The children of James City School enjoyed an Easter party on April 9. The party was sponsored by the Ladies of Craven Civitan Club. Mrs. Jan Hill and Mrs. Alma Drake represented the club. son of the late Frank Proffitt, Sr., who was a well-known traditional folk artists. Mr. Profitt is working through the artist in resi dence program as a coop erative effort between the North Carolina Arts Council and the State Department of Commu nity Colleges. The pur pose of the program is to deepen the appreciation and cultivation of the arts within the state. They were assisted by Mrs. Shirley Fillingame and other staff members. The Civitan served re freshments of Kool-Aid, cup cakes decorated with jelly beans, pink and yellow easter bunnies, cake squares, and bubble gum. The children enjoyed the games and other activities. Tennis association is for all May 1st is the last day for sign up as a charter member in the Vanceboro Area Tennis Association. The association will sponsor many activities this summer for members. One activity planned for the summer is the summer-long Tennis Ladder climaxed by a tournament at the end of the summer. The Tennis Ladder begins May 1. This year the ladder will contain a Men’s and a Ladies’ division. In each division there will be an “A” and a “B” list. “A” is for the person who plays a very competitive game while the “B” list is composed of persons in any age group who just like tennis for the recreation and exercise it gives. A person partici pating in the ladder may challenge someone above him. Matches are sched uled by the participants. You play at your convenience. If a person should defeat a person above him on the ladder, the winner advances to the loser’s spot while the loser drops down one knotch. During the summer, the association will have a cookout and possibly a couple of tournaments. Rev. Ralph Lambert New pastor Rev.Ralph Lambert is the new pastor at Holly Hill Pentecostal Church. He moved to Vanceboro last Thursday with his wife, Ernestine, and 17 year old son, Mike. Rev. Lambert last served the Belfast Pentecostal Holi ness Church in Goldsboro N.C. He will replace Rev. Bruce Avery, who will take over at the Belfast Church. The Holly Hill Life- liners will be presenting a special missions program on Sunday, April 29. The program will begin at 6:30 and will feature Miss Louise Smith, missionary to India, as the special speaker. Everyone is invited to attend this special mis sions service. The Ladies of the Church honored the new pastor with a reception at the church last Sunday night after the evening services. They served cake, meatballs, party franks, cheese waffers, lady fingers and punch.
