... .... |»||WWX* THE WEST CRAVEN 20- HIGHLIGHT volume 2 NO. 17 vanceboro, N.c. - Thursday, May 3,1979 8 Pages 20 Price: 20 Board of Education approves funds Tentative plans for new Vanceboro school eyed A new elementary school for Vanceboro was the topic of discussion last Thursday at a meeting of the Craven County Board of Education. The Board agreed to include funds for the school in its 2.76 million budget for 1979- 80. Bobby Stephens, an architect with Stephens and Cardelli in New Bern, presented his tentative plans for the new building, which will be constructed on the present site of the 65-year- old Farm Life structure. Cautioning the board to not consider the plans as if they were “carved in concrete,” Stephens outlined his plan for in corporating the four newest buildings in the complex. He plans to connect the third grade classroom building, which was the shop (for us older generation) and the library, which was the Home Economics room with a long classroom building down the front of the present structure. The auditorium and gym will be tied in at the other end, which will give the new building a U-shape. Stephens added that after construction on the new Robinson speaks to DECA Club building is completed, the present classroom build ing will be torn down and a recreation area land scaped. Commissioner Grover Lancaster of Vanceboro, who attended the meet ing commented after seeing the plans that he liked the arrangement and utilization of the four newest buildings. He assured the board members that they could count on his vote, when the County Commission ers meet to decide whether or not to include the school in their budget. The estimated cost of By Connie Bryan construction has been set at 2 million. The Board of Education proposed to budget this figure for three years at $670,000 a year. At their meeting the board approved this three year commitment to fund half of this figure. The County Commissioners will be asked to provide the remainder. Commenting during the discussion. Superin tendent Hiram Mayo said, “It is my understanding that there is not another school board in the state that is able to help the commissioners as much as we are.” Doug Robinson of Vanceboro addressed the West Craven Chapter of DECA at their meeting on Thursday, April 5. Robinson, a 1972 gradu ate of West Craven, Bike-A-Thon shaping up The 1979 Cystic Fibro sis Bike-A-Thon, which is scheduled for May 26, is shaping up according to Butch White, coordinator of the event. He says, “We raised over $1200 last year, and we are hoping for pven bigger results this year.” He explained that an 8-mile course has been laid out and that bikers will run three laps for a total of 24 miles. This year there will be two age groups. Those 9 and up will ride the long race with a shorter one planned for young riders. First prize for the older group will be a 26" 10- speed bike. 2nd place will receive a Kodak 110 Pocket Camara with a rod and reel going the the 3rd place winner. Anyone ho raises $25 or more ill receive an “I Did It” T-Shirt, others will get an iron-on sticker. He is presently employed by Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. In his speech to the club, Robinson spoke on how to approach a customer. He told of some of his experiences while work ing in the insurance field. He then passed out pamphlets entitled, "Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide” designed to answer any questions a customer might have. In other business, the club heard reports from Carleen Page and Cheryl Douglas Robinson Fillingame on the state competition in Winston- Salem, which they attended. R.L. Cannon, Jr., club advisor, also reported on the competi tion. The meeting was then adjourned by club president, Charlene Gaskins. CHARTER MEMBER—Mr. J. L. Lancaster Jr., Craven County Commissioner as he pledged his support for the new elementary school to be built in Vanceboro. Lancaster commented that the plans for the school pleased hint greatly. (Highlights File "Photo): ■ Ipock inducted into ECU honor society Gwendolyn Ipock was among a select group of ECU students to be inducted into the ECU chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Gwendo lyn is a junior. Also inducted during the same ceremony, was new ECU Chancellor, Thomas B. Brewer. Like its more famous cousin. Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi honors juniors and seniors in college who achieve the highest in academics at a member school. However, unlike Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi embraces all areas of learning rather than only one phase. In order to become a member, a junior must attain a quality point average of 3.8 of a possible 4.0. Gwendolyn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. McNeil Ipock. In addi- 59th Alumni Banquetslated The Farm Life School Alumni Executive Com mittee met on Tuesday, April 17 at the home of Jimmie Morris to make plans for the 59th Annual Alumni Banquet and Dance slated for May 11. The Banquet starts at 7:00 p.m. In the Farm Life School Cafeteria with the Dance following in the gym at 9:00 p.m. Brenda Ipock and Etheleen Butler, the program committee reported that a very Interesting program is planned consisting of a featured speaker aqd a 9P9Ciqi musical pro- , gram. The Class of 1929 will be celebrating its 50th year reunion and will receive special recognition. Tables will be reserved for it and the Classes of 1939, 1949, 1959, and 1969. Baker Bland and Ray Matthews, the food committee, reported that the banquet will be catered by Parkers Barbecue of Greenville and will consist of barbecue pork and fried chicken with all the trimmings. Morris, secretary- treasurer; Peggie Mills, assistant secretary- treasurer. Nancy Capra- ra, Patsy Townsend, Thalia Broadway, and Sarah Alice Weathering- ton make up the table decorating committee. The nominating com mittee is composed of Bill Cleve and James Earl McLawhom. Pete White and Jatha Smith are responsible for decorations in the gym. At its 1978 banquet the Farm Life School Alumni Association voted to welcome as members any student who had attended Farm Life High School and graduated from another school. The 1979 banquet will be the first to recognize these new members.
