THE WEST CRAVEN 20- HIGHLIGHT a 20 Volume 2 No. 21 Vanceboro, N.c. - Thursday. May 51,1979 Price: 20 Bike-A-Thon A Big Success i ' The 1979 Bike-A- Thon was big success, according to Butch White, coordinator of the event. Although the final total is not known at this time, the Jaycees feel satisfied with the out come of last Saturday’s work. The final total will be annoucned this Saturday at 9:00 in front of the Wachovia Bank. Prizes for the most money raised will also be awarded at that time. Almost twenty riders participated in the Bike- A-Thon. Among the riders was a group from the Epworth United Methodist led by Bruce Haddock, who took the place of Rev. Steve Hickle. The group came from the primary-junior Sunday School class with their teacher, Ann Haddock. They included Bobby Haddock, John Pate, Jay Gaskins, Jimmy ■Haddock, Junior Wall, Sherry Ormond, Denise Wall, Marlene Wall, and Eleanor Wall. Other riders which registered were: Maria Beamon, Dean Broad way, Brian Broadway, Mary White, Kristy Malan, Jackie White, Tina Mayo, Michael Matthews. Jan White, and Dawn Parrish. Jaycees who helped with the project included Bill Taylor, president of the club, Ed Hollowell, Zoot Saunders, Ken Rayner, Doug Fergerson, and Clyde Hummings. The Christian Church sold hot dogs provided by the CWF. The festivites were started by Angela Wilcox, who played the National Anthem on her trumpet. Vanceboro Police Chief Harley Ringer led the bikers around the first 8-mile lap in his patrol car with Craven County Sheriff Department Deputy Stanley Kite following in his patrol car. At the end of the first lap, the group was still excited and full of energy, but by the end of the second lap the miles had taken their toll. It was a smaller but determined group that set out on that last 8-mile ride. Finally it was all behind them and they left for home with tired muscles but also with a happy heart, knowing that their efforts had been for such a good cause as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He explained that the 2 million dollars needed for construction of the new school will be allocated over the next three years and that this year’s allocatibn of $670,000 has been placed in the budget. He added that $350,000 would come from county funds, while an equal amount will be supplied from school funds. Finance Director Wilbur Williamson will submit the budget, which Commissioner Lancaster described as very large, at the Commissioners’ meeting this Monday at 2:00 at the Craven County Court House. At this meeting and others, the Commissioners will have to deliberate on the items. The final draft will be presented at the first meeting in July. The public is cordially invited to attend Ixtth of Bird*s Eye View of New Bern Tilton explains Exchange Club By Rebecca Smith Fazio ,events;,,,., Mr. John Tilton, newly elected president of the National Exchange Club in New Bern, explained what the recently charter ed club stands for. According to Mr. Tilton, the club is the largest and oldest service civic club in the United States. It provides a forum for business and professional men to exchange ideas, as well as sponsor different community projects. Anyone interested in joining this group whould call 633-5171. The club meets monthly at the Berne Restaurant. The Steering Committee of the International Year of the Child met last Thursday evening at the Garber United Methodist Church. Plans were discussed for the lYC , Booth at the Aware Fair. A reunion for children in the Head Start program 1965-70 is also planned. More will be announced during being details later.
