Wilkersons dedicated
Over 200 people gather
ed in the chapel of the new
S. G. Wilkerson & Sons
Funeral Home in Vance-
boro for a service dedi
cating the new facility at
3:00 p.m. last Sunday. A
welcome by George W.
Wilkerson, president of S.
G. Wilkerson & Sons, was
followed by remarks from
Vanceboro Mayor Jimmie
Morris and State Senator
Joe Thomas. Mayor Morris
commented that the town
was very pleased that S. G.
Wilkerson & Sons had
selected it as the site of
their facility and on behalf
of the town, he welcomed S.
G. Wilkerson & Sons to
Vanceboro. Senator
Thomas in his remarks
referred to the new facility
as "another step in the
progress of this communi
ty.” He added that
Wilkerson’s had always
been active in community
projects.
Speaking for S. G.
Wilkerson & Sons, Don
Wilkerson, secretary of the
company, complimented
the construction crews and
all the Wilkerson staff
who participated in the
construction of the new
funeral home. He then
outlined a brief history of
S. G. Wilkerson & Sons
from its start in the early
1930’s to the construction
of its new Greenville
facility in 1975.
Commenting further,
Mr. Wilkerson said, “We
want to provide this
community with dignified
funeral service.” He added,
“We are proud of this
facilityand we are proud to
be a part of this communi
ty.”
After Mr. Wilkerson’s
address, the Morris Sisters
Trio, of Linda Thomas,
Gloria Williams, and
Peggie Mills, sang Bless
This Hotise. The Dedica
tory Address was then
delivered by Rev. Robert
Cayton, president of the
Vanceboro Ministerial
Association and pastor of

Waters family
holds reunion
The family of Mrs.
Margaret Waters gathered
at National Croatan Park
on July 4th for a family
outing and picnic. A picnic
lunch was served by the
women who had each
prepared a picnic basket.
The children of Mrs.
Waters who attended were
Mr. and Mrs. Garland
Taylor, and children,Mr.
and Mrs. Vernon Wilkin
son, Jr. and children of
Washington,NC, Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Broadwaiy and
children, Charlie,Jr., Judy
and Vickie Waters, Mr.
and Mrs. Lester Fornes,
and Mr. and Mrs. Clinton
Phillips and Ginger of New
Bern.
Others attending were
Mr. and Mrs. Ardell
Provost and Nicole of
Maysville. Also joining
them were Mrs. Waters’
sister and her family all
from Kinston, Mr. and
Mrs. Auston Buck, Mr. and
Mrs. Earl Joyner,Chris
and Rita, Mr. and Mrs.
Ramie Joyner and Melissa,
Charlie Fornes, and
Melissa Gupton.
An enjoyable day was
had by all and it was
decided to make it an
annual event to celebrate
each 4th of July.
Jaycees
meet each
Wednesday
Membership in the
Vanceboro Jaycees is still
open to any man between
the ages of 18 and 35. The
Jaycees meet each Wednes
day night at the home of
Butch White.
They are planning to
become involved in many
different types of commu
nity activities. Projects in
the offing include an open
tennis tournament in mid-

service Mrs. Linda Thomas
sang The Lord’s Prayer.
Music for the service was
provided by Sandra
McCandless at the organ.
Following the service,
guests were invited to tour
the facility, which includes
a reposing room, office,
display room, lobby, and a
200-seat chapel. A special
feature of the funeral home
is a family room adjacent to
the chapel, which has a
separate access door to
provide family members
with privacy during a
funeral.
The funeral home will be
open from 9:00 to 5:00 on
Monday and Thursday. In
addition to being open all
day whenever there is a
death in the area.
However, burial assistance
is available anytime by
dialing 244-0771.
Moye-Dawson
Reunion
The Moye-Dawson
Reunion recently held at
the Vanceboro Community
Center was a big success
with members traveling
from as far away as Los
Angeles, Calif. Helen
Roundtree daughter of
Isabelle Roundtree trav
eled from Los Angeles. Mr.
J.D. Dawson of Rocky
Mount was the oldest
member present and the
youngest member was
Chuki Sinclair of Rocky
Mount.
WILKERSON’S OPENS— S.G. Wilkerson & Sons opened their new funeral
home facility in Vanceboro with a dedication ceremony last Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
Over 200 people gathered in the air-conditioned chapel of the new building for
the services. Afterwards guests were invited to tour the facility.
ATTENDED ELECTRIC CONGRESS— Craven County 4-H members Beverly
Gaskins, Rt. 5, New Bern, and Laura Chernouskas, 121 Shepard St., Havelock,
were delegates to the State 4—H Electric Congress at the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte, July 9-11. James B. Holton, agricultural extension agent,
(left) and Ted Coop, Carolina Power and Light Company customer service
representative, (right) accompanied the delegates. The 4-H’ers were selected fo r
achievement in their electric projects. Carolina Power and Light Company
sponsored their trip to
Electric Congress.

TOBACCO BARN BURNS— A tobacco barn,
belonging to Jim Wiggins, caught fire on Friday, July
13. The Vanceboro Volunteer Fire Department
answered the alarm, which came at 1:30. The barn
was located on the Nelson Road near Vanceboro.
