See details in Rick’s story on Peqe 51 THE WEST CRAVEN HIGHLIGHT V Plans for Cove City Fireman^s Day Everyone in Cove City is gearing up for the annual Fireman’s Day festivities, which are scheduled for this Saturday. Mary Ann Fulcher and Peggy Grady, chairwomen of the event, report that everything is on track for a successful day of food, fun, and frolics. The excitment begins at 10:00 a.nu with a parade. which starts at the old school then winds through the streets of Cove City and ends up at McCoy’s Food Center. The West Craven Marching Eagles will participate in the parade along with many local dignitaries. Barbecue pork and chicken plates, at $2.50 each, will be sold all day. Special activities include a Revival Slated for Christian Church The Vanceboro Chris- tain Church will hold its annual revival beginning Monday night at 7:30, October 1 and going through October 5. There will be special singing and refreshments each night. Rev. Richard Engle, pastor, invites everyone to attend. The visiting minister will be Rev. Arthur Lilley, pastor of the Broad Street Christian Church. Rev. Lilley is a native of Jamesville, North Carolina in Martin County. Follow- a tour of duty in World ^ror II, he graduated from Wake Forest College in 1949. Ten years later, in 1959 he entered the Christian Ministry, and continued his education at the Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky. During his seminary days he served the Flatwoods Christian Church in Waco, Ken tucky, from 1959-63. From there he returned to North Carolina as minister of the young Eastway Christian Church in Charlotte, North ^^rolina. Following a |^B:cessful nine year ministry at Eastway, he returned to Kentucky, ministering again to the Flatwoods Church while working on his doctorate Rev. Arthur Lilley degree in Lexington. On January 1, 1978, he began his ministry with Broad Street Christian Church in New Bern. Rev. Lilley lives with his wife of 32 years, Hattie, in New Bern. They have three grown daugh ters. The topics for each night will be as follows: Monday....“Come, Let us Reason Together” Isaiah 1:8, Tuesday....“Fire In My Bones” Jeremiah 20:7-18, Wednesday ...“Bridge Over Trouble Waters” selections from Hosea, Isaiah, Luke, Thursday ..“Land of Love” Deuter onomy 5:4; and Leviticus 19:18b, Friday...“The Business of the Church” Matthew 28:18 Homecoming services will be held on Sunday, October 7, beginning with the worship service at 11:00. flea market, a bazaar, a bake sale, an arcade, a duck pond, a concession stand, bingo and booths. Entertainment will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature square dancing by the Tryon Twirlers, Monica Heath and other local artists and musicians. At 4 p.m. contestants and spectators will gather for a pie-eating contest, a nail driving contest, and a watermelon seed spitting contest. There will also be a squirrel cage ride. Booths will close at 5 p.m. and an auction is scheduled for 5:15. A highlight of the day for many will be the beauty pageants, with Rachel McCoy, Pageant Chair man. At 7 p.m. Zoot Saunders will emcee the Miss Spark Pageant for girls 5-9 years old. This will be followed at 8 p.m. by the Miss Flame Pageant for young ladies ages 16-21. All of the proceeds will go to help the Cove City Volunteer Fire Depart ment. The department got its start in 1960 and has since grown to include 35 active members and a Women’s Auxiliary with 25 members. CANDIDATES MUST FILE- Mayor Jimmie Morris (shown here) is the only candidate to have filed as a candidate for mayor in the upcoming elections in Vanceboro. All names must be submitted to the Town Clerk no longer than 12 noon on October 5, in order to appear on the ballot. (Highlights file photo) Candidates Slow to file for office The last day to file for election to a position on the Vanceboro Board of Alderman or as Mayor is Friday, October 5, at 12:00 noon. In order for a candidate’s name to appear on the ballot, he or she must file for the office at the Town Hall. The election is Thurber Carnival to come to Vanceboro scheduled for November 6. The registration books will be opened each day, from 9- 5 until October 8. At press time, Jimmie Morris, who has served as Mayor of Vanceboro since 1971, was the only candidate to have filed for that office. Alton Whitley was the only person to have filed for Board of Alderman; however, Becky Laughinghouse, town clerk, commented that she felt most people would be coming in next week. Fourth week bring^s four-way tie Mills wins Foot ball Contest Peggie Mills survived a four-way tie for first place to win in the fourth week of the Football Contest being sponsored by the High lights and area businesses. All four entries tied for first picked Dallas in the tie-breaker. Even though Dallas lost. Mills guessed Dallas’ score closer than any of the other contestants and so was declared the winner. A1 Perry guessed next closest and so was awarded second. Billy Johnson of Ft. Barnwell was next and so third. Johnny Daly won the drawing for five dollars out of thirteen entries that beat the editors. After four weeks, the four winners remain in a tie for first place in the race for the trip to Disney World for two. Those are Clay Jordan, Billy Arrington, Patrick Troutner, and Peggie Mills. The correct winners this past weekend were Detroit, Pittsburgh, Miami, Minnesota, Hous ton, Tampa Bay, New Gleans, Buffalo, Kansas City, Philadelphia, New England, Denver, Wash ington, Wake Forest, (tie breaker) Cleveland, 26 points. James Thurber (1894- 1961) is considered by many to be the finest American humorist since Mark Twain. A Thurber Carnival is a collection of his best works, which include The Unicom in the Garden and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The evening of family enter tainment will be presented by the Footlight 'Theatre of New Bern on Saturday, October 13, at 8:15 p.m. at Farm Life Auditorium. The event is a fund raiser for the Vanceboro Youth Council with co-sponsor ship by the Vanceboro Junior Woman’s Club. For tickets call Rev. Fashion Show Rescheduled The Fall Fashion Show, sponsored by the Vance boro Junior Woman’s Club, was postponed from last Saturday to this Saturday, September 29, because of the wet weather. The show, which was to have been held in the yard of Mrs. Ann Lancaster, has been rescheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Vanceboro Christian Church. Tickets are still available from any club member or at the High lights office. Tickets may also be picked up at the door.
