# Fireman’s Day
By Rick Cannon
FORT BARNWELL--
Though dampened some
what by rain and cold, the
Fort Barnwell Fireman’s
Day went off as planned,
with many visitors
enjoying a fun-filled day
last Saturday, November
3. Frankie White, Fire
Chief, called the day a
successful one. “We haven’t
had quite as many people
here this year as we had
last year.” White explain
ed, “but the ones who came
have really supported us.”
He went on to indicate that
he felt the firemen would
come out all right.
A highlight of the day
was the Annual Fireman’s
Day Parade. It featured
fire engines from many of
the surrounding fire
districts. The' Havelock
High School Band per
formed in the parade. Also
participating in the parade
was State Senator Joseph
Thomas of Vanceboro and
State Representative Chris
Barker of New Bern.
Cheerleaders from West
Craven High School and
Junior High School added
a touch of beauty to the
parade. Bringing up the
rear of the parade was that
“jolly old elf’ Santa Clause
making a special early
guest appearance.
Following the parade,
hundreds of families
feasted on delicious
barbecue pork and chicken
prepared by members of
the fire department. Ann

Following complaints by
Earl Wright and other
citizens, the Vanceboro
Board of Aldermen revised
an earlier ordinance
concerning the firing of
guns within the city limits
at their meeting last
Monday night. Mayor
Jimmie Morris recom
mended prohibiting any
shooting within the city
limits: however after
discussion, it was decided
to regulate the different
|^?firearms. The shooting of
rifles or pistols within the
corporate limits of
Vanceboro is prohibited,
while the firing of a
shotgun is limited to
beyond 160 yards of any
building or street. Mr.
Wright, in his plea for a
stiffer ruling, sited an
incident last summer when
a stray bullet came in a
bedroom window of his
home, narrowly missing
his daughter. He added
that the shooting had
started back in recent
weeks.
In other action the board,
’passed an ordinance which
prohibits the riding of a
skateboard on the side
walks or streets of
Vanceboro and on private
parking lots without the
written permission of the
property owner.
Nancy Register, Chair
person for Conservation of
the Vanceboro Junior
Woman’s Club, requested
permission for the club to
place low growing shrubs
and pine chip around the
three Welcome signs
coming into Vanceboro.
The board approved this
project.
The board also endorsed
the policy of Police Chief
Hudgins to crack down on
people that pass a car on
the right. He reported that
several near accidents
have occurred when a car
passes on the right of a car
preparing to make a left
turn.
Leaves Must
be in
Containers
The Town Board in a
ruling Monday night
stated that leaves will
continue to be picked up by
town employeesonly if they
are in a plastic bag or some
kind of container. Employ
ees have reported that
some people have been
leaving the leaves in piles
beside the road.
