I Christmas Open House ^planned for this Sunday The 1979 Christmas Open House sponsored by the Downtown Merchants in Vanceboro will be held on Sunday afternoon, November 25,1979 from 1- 5 p.m. Merchants partici pating in this annual event will be Cleve’s Florist and Garden Center, M. & W. Antiques & Gifts, Vance boro Pharmacy, Pat’s Furniture Co., Cannon’s Variety Store, and Tinka’s ^Gifts and Jewelry. Plans "are being made to have the lighting of Vanceboro’s Christmas Tree at the Stoplight in Vanceboro. During the afternoon tentative plans include musical presentations from choirs, bands, and other musical groups from the area. Each merchant will be open to display many gift ideas for Christmas. Each store will have a drawing for a special doorprize and will serve refreshments. Tilghman Selected Neal Tilghman, a senior at West Craven High School, has been selected to sing with the North Carolina Honors Chorus for the opening of the North Carolina Music Educators Assoication convention. Chosen by audition, the Honors Chorus is composed of 160 of the top high school choral students in the state. After two days of rehear sal, the chorus will perform Sunday, Novem ber 18 in Winston-Salem for the annual convention. Conducted by noted composer-arranger Alice Parker, the chorus will be accompanied by the orchestra from North Carolina School of the Arts. Neal is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Tilghman of Cove City and has been a member of the West Craven Select Choir for two years. Craven County Schools offered special programs and demonstra tions throughout the week to mark this year’s theme, “Teach All the Children.” Poster, essay, and recita tions contests were held during the week. The awards were presented to the winners by Martha Blake, art teacher at Havelock High, and Vicki Wilson, English teacher at West Craven, in a ceremony oh Thursday at the Superintendent’s office. Mrs. Blake and Miss Wilson served as co chairpersons for the committee. Scout Leaders Honored Football Contest Pages 6 and 7 Scout Leaders from the Neuse Basin District of the East Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America were honored at a dinner and awards presentation on Thursday, November 15, in the West Craven High School Cafeteria. Thomas Pauling, District Chairman, introduced guests and welcomed everyone. Following dinner, Mike Lewis, District Commis sioner, presented Round- Up Awards to Troop 13, Pack 231, Pack 132, and Pack 289. These groups recruited at least 6 new members each. The Unit Organizer Award went to Leonard Long, Post 717 and Kenneth McLain, Post 777. Vanceboro Troop 58 received the Attendance Award. Following the installa tion of the 1980 officers and a tribute to all the unit leaders by Lewis Wesley, District Scout Executive the Distinguished Service Awards were presented. The following awards were presented cubmaster - Garrison Swiggart, Pack 132; Den Leader - Freda Lupton, Pack 641; Scout master - Roger Heckman, Troop 299; Webelos - Jimmy Siers, Pack 132; Commissioner- Mike Lewis; and District Committeeman - Tom Pauling. JWC to donate shrubs for Vanceboro Welcome sig^ns After receiving permis sion from the Vanceboro Board of Aldermen, the Vanceboro Junior Wo man’s Club plans to place shrubs around the Wel come sign coming into town. The club will sponsor a Holiday House on Saturday. November 24, from 10-4 p.m. at the fire house with the proceeds being used to purchase the shurbs. Crafts and baked goods will be on sale throughout the day, and holiday, items will be featured. Soup and sandwiches will also be sold.
