Construction of New LRC Begins
The educational philosophy of Craven
Community College dictates how the learning
resources center is to function. The College itself
exists to afford students the opportunity of
obtaining an education, and the learning resources
center exists to aid in this instructional process.
Learning is an active process. Philosophically,
the learning resources center is an integral part of
the learning process rather than merely an
pcillary service operation. Learning is a personal,
individual process, and the center provides
effective tools toward this end. The LRC is the
workshop where students (and faculty) actively
pursue meaningful study - - read maps, pamphlets,
magazines, and books: view filmstrips, videotapes,
motion pictures; and use microreaders and
programmed learning materials.
Essentially, the LRC is not a building, it is the
people who teach and learn in that facility. The
College’s chief concern is with these people. At
CCC the LRC is a place where students can share
as part of a group or go solo if they wish. It is a place
where students do not have to be the best in order to
participate and grow.
To accommodate the various personal
relationships and types of learning experiences, a
diversified environment is needed in a choice of
large-group, medium-group, small-group, directed
independent study, independent self-study, and
laboratory spaces.
A student said, “The typical community college
student wants to study in.a quiet place, with group
study areas available for discussion and
interaction.” Few of the community college
commuting students would find such a study area
available without the learning resources center.
A mixture of classrooms, laboratories, enclosed
conference rooms, individual study carrels
equipped with multimedia equipment, table
seating, and lounge seating has been requested by
students and faculty at Craven Community College.
When these spaces are translated into terms of
operating activity, the LRC comes forth as an
instruction, production, and service facility.
