Hewett was unable to attend but he sent a letter asking the Ladies to start planning for Clergy Week which is observed in February. A Letter from ^ the City of Lighf By J. L. Peterson, Jr. [Ed. Note: J. L. Peterson, Jr. is studying and living in Paris, France this winter. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Peterson, Sr. of Vanceboro. This is the first of series of letters acquainting our readers with the City of Light, Paris.] 22 November 1979. It’s Thanksgiving Day, 1979-somewhere, that is, but not here. In the City of Light many Holidays are enjoyed in this country where 90% of the popula tion are Roman Catholics. Many days of the Christian calender are observed and saints’ special feast days are honored in addition to the usual national holidays. There are many special days but “Thanksgiving Day” just doesn’t happen to be one of them. In fact, the name doesn’t even trans late into the language. There is no turkey to be found! No Butterballs, no turkey price wars, no special buffet luncheons not “prepared turkey, with all the trimmings deliver ed to your door” can be found. The best I could get was roast chicken, but I did not complain because nowhere is roast chicken prepared better. True, it lacks something in the trimmings since yams are rare and cranberries do not grow here and are totally unknown. Pumpkin pie? Nope, not that either. But again, one does not suffer in a country whose pastries are famous all over the world. Today it’s cold in this city-as it seems always to be. At 7:45 p.m., I standja the New Bridge. It’s oldest bridge still standi^ in Paris. It’s called the New Bridge because its construction marked a new era when begun in 1578. It was the first bridge to be constructed of stone and in a completely new style. I watch as the evening traffice makes its way home just like any other day. It’s later than our big city rush hours, since most offices and businesses here are open later. But rush hour is the same all over the world. Workers are hurrying home to a warm fireplace and dinner. The one thing I’m sure of today is that they won’t be sitting down to turkey, and dressing, and pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving is not celebrated in the City of In Memory Mr. Grover J. Hill, 72, retired electrician, died at his home on Buck Lane in Vanceboro Thursday morning. The funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Vance boro by Rev.
