DECA honors employers
by Rick Cannon
NEW BERN - Over
eighty-five students,
employers and special
guests attended the annual
West Craven High School
DECA Employer- Em
ployee Banquet. The
banquet, was held at the
Golden Corral Steak House
here.
Seven students were
recognized for working
over one thousand hours
during the school in
addition to maintaining
their regular school work
at West Craven High
School. Charlie Fornes
topped the list, working
1403 hours at Fornes
Garage-"^/ in Vanceboro.
Other students working
over the one thousand hour
mark were Michael
McKeithen, David Man
ning, Terence King, Sheri
Turnage, Steve Rowe and
Greg Watson. Mr. Hiram
Mayo, Craven County
Superintendent, praised
the students for their
dedication to their work.
Attending the banquet
with his wife, Mayo added
that many people get only a
liberal arte education and
no on-the-job experience.
He explained that some
educators are beginning to
say that a system like the
Distributive Education
Program should be
required of all students
before they graduate from
high school. In other
words, there is a growing
trend of thought which
feels that more students
should have some work
experience before gradua
ting. Mayo encouraged the
students to take pride in
their work, since work is a
contribution to others. In
addition, work can give a
sense of purpose to ones
life.
Mayo also praised R. L.
Cannon, Jr., D. E.
Coordinator, as one of the
leading experts in the
Distributive Education
Program in eastern North
Carolina.
Each firm employing
students in the Distribu
tive Education Program
was presented a Certificate
of Appreciation from the
Student-employees. Firms
employing students during
the 1979-80 Program
include Foodland #2,
McCoy’s Food Center,
Montgomery Ward, Crav
en County Hospital,
Laminated Wood Products
Sutton’s Supermarket,
Cannon’s Variety Store,
Golden Corral, Mid
American metals, Chick-
Fil-A, Clark’s Discount,
