The East Carolina Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society will sponsor the nostalgic trip on Saturday, August 8th. The train will be pulled by two 1960’s vintage diesel locomotives and will include three open air excursion coaches. The trip will begin at Raleigh’s old Norfolk Southern Railway Building on North Boulevard at 8:00 a.m. and will return to that same station at 5:30 p.m. Stops during the day will be made in Wilson, Farmville, Greenville, Chocowinity and New Bern. Town Board Meets New Town Clerk hired By RICK CANNON A new town clerk was hired, the new town park was discussed and. the same old parking problem was rehashed at the regular monthly meeting of the Vanceboro Town Board Monday night. Mrs. Carol Ann Ipock of Route 2, Vanceboro will begin work Monday, August 10 as Vanceboro’s new Town Clerk, Mayor Jimmie Morris announced. A bookkeeper for over eighteen years, she replaced Rebecca Laughinghouse who held the position for five years following a four year term as Assistant Town Clerk. "I’m looking forward to serving as Vanceboro’s Town Clerk,’’ Mrs. Ipock said when asked about '' her neW job. She is currently employed as bookkeeper and secretary for Kill-a-Bug Pest Control and Attitude Development Associates in New Bern. Nothing was mentioned about her salary, but apparently she will earn a portion of the $13,000 allotted in the 1981-1982 budget for administration salaries. Concerning the new Town Park, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Mrs. Daphne Cleve explained that before work can be started something must be done to eradicate the red bugs and poison ivy on the site. The Town Board discussed spraying the area to try to solve the problem so work can begin as soon as possible but according to Mayor Jimmie Morris no action was taken. ANOTHER PARKING LOT In spite of the new parking lot at Farm Life School, problems still persist concerning parking and traffic congestion on McLawhorn Lane during softball games on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. Mrs. Dorothy Simpson, who lives on McLawhorn Lane, complained that few people seem to be using the parking area and that cars lined up on the side of the street hamper efforts to service her tobacco barns. The Board discussed the situation and directed Streets Commissioner Abe Cleve I Mrs. Carol Ann Ipock to look into the problem and request the managers of the teams to appoint someone to help direct traffic into the parking area. They also suggested that he look for space for another parking area to help handle the cars. More space may be available once construction is completed on the new Farm Life Elementary School. IT IS COUNTY PROPERTY There appears to be little the Vanceboro Board can do to prohibit parking on side of McLawhorn Lane nearest the softball fields since that property is controlled and owned by Craven County not Vanceboro. “We can prohibit parking in the middle of the street, but not on that side as long as the street is not obstructed.” After the meeting. Street Commissioner Cleve viewed the situation during softball action Monday night and commented, "the parking seems all right to me.” REAFFIRMED SUPPORT The Board made it clear that they wholeheartedly support the Vanceboro Softball League as one of the "best things that has happened in Vanceboro in years.” Tobacco Field Stripped These workers on the A.D. Morris farm near Vanceboro were some of the first in the area to strip their tobacco fields. The workers are (from right to left): Herbert Quinerly, Doug Garris, A.D. Morris, Jr., Calvin Garris and Frankie Anderson.
