Some Vanceboro residents were startled
to notice an apparent increase in their water
and sewer bill this month. The increase,
which became effective with the beginning
of the fiscal year on July 1, is an effort to get
$52,000 in sewer system grant money the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is
holding up. Mayor Jimmie Ntorris said. As
reported in the January 8,1981 issue of the
Highlights, the EPA-financed water
treatment plant operated at a $10,000 deficit
for its first year. Mayor Morris added that

the system has suffered the same deficit
during the second year. To get the
remainder of the EPA funds, the town must
operate the plant at a break-even rate or
better. Morris explained that it is urgent for
the town to get the $62,000 EPA is stiil
holding because part of the money is
currently owed to contracters.
Morris explained that the rate schedule
would have to be reviewed each year to make
sure the system is operating in the black.

Morris added that the rates may have to be
adjusted to pay for future increases in costs.

A few changes await Students

Vanceboro Elementary School as soon as
possible. In order to register, the child’s
birth certificate and shot records need to be
presented.
Teachers, Aides and Staff are to report for
duty at the individual schools on August
17th.
Students in the New Bern-Craven County
School System will begin classes for the
1981-82 school year during the last week of
August.
Students in grades 1 through 12 will begin
classes on August 28th. This will be a full
day of school and lunch will be served.
Kindergarten students whose last
names begin with the letters A - L will
attend their first day of classes on August
28th. Students with last names beginning
with letters M - Z will go for their first day
on August 31st. All kindergarten
student’s second day will be September
1st. In other words, those students who
attend on the 28th will not attend on the
31st.
Parents of kindergarten aged students
need to preregister their children at the
Grades Chang:e Schools
The recent merge of the New Bern and
Craven County schools has led to several
changes in the operations of the system;
among those are the movement of some of the
grades to new schools from the ones which
they were in previously. To make more room
at the Farm Life School in Vanceboro the
6th grade students will be moved to the West

Several area residents were among those ladies who
attended the Free Will Baptist Women’s Auxilliary
Conference during the week of August 3rd through August
8th at the Cragmont Assembly in Black Mountain, N.C. The
Women spent their time at Cragmont attending various
meetings pertaining to the Women’s Auxilliary and to the
Church.
Arlinda Wilson Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.T.
Wilson of Rt. 2, Vanceboro and her husband. Rev. John
Williams, are year-round residents of the Cragmont facility.
Rev. Williams serves as the resident pastor there.’
Area ladies who attended are: Mrs. Ola Smith, Mrs. Sarah
Frances Gaskins, and Mrs. Pat Wilson, all from the
Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church; Ms. Velma Morris,
Mrs. Irene Morris, Mrs. Julia Fillingame, Mrs. Rosa Wilson
and Mrs. Carrie Lee McVickers. all of the Juniper Chapel
Free Will Baptist Church; and Mrs. Queenie Laughinghouse
from the Reunion Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
