West Craven Highlights, January 14,1982, Page 7 Banking Institution Begins Scholarship Program # € WACHOVIA -technical scholarships have been established by Wachovia Bank and Trust Company for ichnical training in the state’s community college system. |tecussing the new scholarship program are Dr. Thurman irock (1), president of Craven Community College and Alton Whitley, chief executive officer of Wachovia’s Vanceboro office. Wachovia Bank and Trust Company has estabiished a $250,000 endowment to support scholarships for technical training in the state’s community college system, including Craven Community College, Announcement of the gift, a first in the system’s history, was made earlier this month by Governor James B. Hunt! Jr. Income from the $250,000 grant will support the Wachovia Technical Scholarship Program and provide 50 scholarships, valued at $500 each, for the 37 schools in Wachovia’s service areas. The remaining 13 scholarships will be allocated to the participating schools based on their enrollment in technical training programs. The first scholarships, which are anticipated to cover the cost of tuition, books, and transportation for the recinipnu will be awarded in the fall of 1982. “Over the years, Wachovia has contributred heavily to higher education in North Carolina and actively participated in industrial development efforts to attract more and better jobvs to the state,"said John G, Medlin, Jr„ president of Wachovia. Wachovia Technical Scholarships will be awarded to students in the second year of two-year technical programs. Selection will be made on the basis of need and on a student’s performance in the first year of training. Dr. Larry J. Blake, state president of the N, C, Department of Community Colleges, said “The beauty of it all is that the recipients of these scholarships are those students who find it even more difficult to get financial assistance, since most aid is directed to those in the first year of training,” Saw Cost Analysis Includes All Items Chainsaws are spitting sawdust around more and more woodlots and home grounds these days as more Americans become saw owners. The primary moti vation is savings in labor and money. There is no question that the noisy little monsters save labor. Remember the old crosscut saw? No doubt the chainsaws are helping to save on fuel costs for many homeowners who are using wood as a primary heating fuel. But the saws, in addition to their purchase price, have a cost of their own - fixed and operating costs. An analysis by one authoritative source puts this cost at $1.31 per hour. This figure includes some fixed cost items that most individual saw owners prob ably wouldn’t consider -- taxes, interest and insurance, for example. The combined cost of these three items came to 29 cents per hour, accord ing to figures used in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) analysis. Special Training For Special Parents ■Parents of handicapped children are being given a special opportunity to become “trained” educational advocates for their own children and other handi capped children in their communities and the state. A new project sponsored by the Governor’s Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities (GACPD) in the N. C. Department of Administration will provide training for a limited number of parents who will, in turn, train others. For details, call Toni James, GACPD, (919) 733-3111.
