P«g« 8, WMt Cravtn Highlights, Ptbruary 11; 1982 West Craven High T( February 7-13 has been designated National Vocational Education Week by the American Vocational Association. Established in 1967 by a resolution of the AVA house of delegates; the event provides a special opportunity to make the public aware of the vocational programs, recognize the contributions^ of students, instructors, and employers. although their contribution is not included in the Gross National Product. Vocational programs at West Craven High School seek to equip students with marketable skills or serve as a basis for further education and training. Each program attempts to provide experiences which contribute to the making of informed and meaningful educational and vocational choices by students. The program also encompasses training in homemaking skills and consumer competencies, activities which contribute to human welfare Betty Dawson - Clothing Service Home Economics Program February is a month of celebrations at West Craven High School—Lincoln’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday, Valentine’s Day, National Vocational Education Week and Future Homemakers of America and Home Economics Related Occupation Week. In the West Craven Home Economics classes, skills are developed that will help future wage earners as well as homemakers. Classes in Clothing Service, Food Service, Family Life Education, and Advanced Consumer and Homemaking are offered for the development of these skills. As FHA/HERO club members, students are adding to classroom knowledge through projects focusing on family life, community living, and personal growth. The West Craven Home Economic program strives to prepare students to be better leaders, family members, homemakers, friends, and workers. Mark Wetherington - Graphics Even though knowledge and skills developed by students in general education courses are equally applicable to all aspects of life, regardless of occupation chosen, general education serves as the foundation for Vocational Education, In other words, there can be high quality Vocational Education program withouta high quality general Educational program serving as its base. The Vocational program is provided by professional educators (in consultation with business/industry) in a school environment. The mission of the Vocational Education Department of West Craven High School is to provide necessary administrative and consultative leadership through the school for insuring that all youth, who need, want Electricity Three distinct areas of electricity is taught which are, Basic Electri city, Industrial/Motor Control System, and Residential Electrical Wiring. Basic electricity covers language, laws, symbols, component function, circuit char acteristics, and applica tions of electricity to the home and industry. Industrial/Motor Control System covers the most commonly used control circuits and systems utilizing 'solid state controls, electro-mecha nical device, and trans ducers. Residential electrical wiring covers the wiring of a typical residence based on the latest edition of the National Electric Code. All areas involve the study of theory and practical application which is practical on component kits or mock ups. Terry Ipock - Electricity Graphics The Graphics depart ment of West Craven provides training for those students who show interest or talents in the areas of printing, layout, photography, and those machine operations necessary to become a successful printer. Cameras, photo composers, offset presses, an(L. bindery machines are just examples of machinery that students skillfully learn to operate. Upon successful compli- etion of this course many students continue their education or are employ ed. and can profit from Vocational Education and/or consumer and homemaking education have ready suited to their needs, interests and aspirations, and which is realistic in light of actual or anticipated opportunities for gainful employment. As an integral part of the educational process at West Craven High School, Vocational Education has as its specific functions: (a) to prepare individuals for entry level employment in recognized occupations, new occupations, and emerging occupations, (b) to prepare individuals for participating in advance or highly skilled post secondary vocational and technical education, (c) to assist individuals in the making of informed and meaningful occupational choices (pre-vocational- introductory), and to prepare students for homemaking roles or for multiple roles homemaker, wage earners and consumers. as Randy Cook - Auto Mechanics Auto Mechanics The study of Auto Mechanics involves the study of basic mechan ical and physical sciences employed in the design and construction of the automobile. History of the automobile, prin ciples of operation, use of tools, equipment, and safetv are covered. Basic theory of automobile construction and opera tion is covered, including component part identifi cation, function, assemb ly, and fundamentals of diagnostic procedures are introduced. The theory of engines. Tyrone (ircar - Graphics electrical, power train, brakes, front end and air conditioning is covered in Auto Mechanics. The Third Year-More emphasis is placed on automobile service and overhaul, stressing the use of precision measure ment and workmanship. Work will include fault isolation and repair of problems in the following area: engine, electrical, power train brakes, front end and air-conditioning. The student should be capable of repair of all the above areas and restoring to operating condition. 0
