It’s news to no one that
there will be less federal
dollars available for
public programs in the
1980’s.
To many public pro
grams, this drying up of
funds will have grave
consequences. One local
agency, however, is doing
something about it.
According to Irma Casey,
Director of the Adult
Developmental Activities
Program for mentally
retarded adults, “Public
programs need to look to
private business and
industry if they are to
survive.”
The New Bern ADAP
is doing just that.
Through a contract with
the Woodruff Distri
buting Company, the
New Bern ADAP has
recently opened an
aluminum can recycling
in the Old James City
School on Highway 70
East in New Bern . “The
most important aspect to
this new program is that
it is not a ‘hand out’. "
explained Mrs. Casey.
“The mentally retarded
men and women who
operate the recycling
center are very, very
proud of their work and
the small incomes they
receive.”
Mrs. Casey noted two
further goals of the
program. “First, the
recycling center should
minimally expect to take
in over 100,000 pounds of
cans each year—-that’s
2,400,000 cans! Obviously
this will have a direct
impact on the environ
ment since that’s 100,000
pounds of litter that
won’t wind up on our
State’s roadsides.”
Conservation is a second
goal. “Using recycled
aluminum to make new
containers cost only 5% of
what it would cost to
make them from mined
ore. This reduces the cost
of production for the
industry, helps keep
consumer prices down
and conserves.
