Pag* 6, Watt Craven Highlights, Pabruary 25,1982 Annual Soup Supper The Vanceboro Christian Church will have its Annual Soup Supper in observance of the Week Of Compassion at 6:00 p.m. this Sunday night, February 28th. A film strip related to the program will be shown. An offering will be taken for missions. Miss Lisa Maria Laughinghous«> Wedding Planned Miss Lisa Maria Laughinghouse is the daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Laughinghouse of 802 Howell Road, New Bern, who announce her engagement to Lewis D,. Ipock, Jr., of Ernul. The Wedding will take place on July 24,1982 at Pleasant Acres F. W.B. Church. All relatives and friends of the couple are invited to attend the ceremony. Leadership Development For Women Actress-singer Polly Bergen, television newswoman Jessica Savitch, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and South Carolina’s Lt. Gov. Nancy Stevenson will join Gov. Jim Hunt on the program of the Governor’s Conference on Leadership Development for Women planned for March 11-12 in Raleigh. Approximately 1,000 women from throughout the state are expected to attend the conference in the Raleigh Civic Center. The Conference, entitled the “The Future Agenda,’’ is a follow-up to the previous statewide conference held in 1978, to nine regional conferences, and to 100 county conference which are to completed by the March conference. The conferences, convened by Gov. Hunt to provide leadership development opportunities for North Carolina women, have attracted more than 15.000 participants. Gov. Hunt will open the conference at 10 a.m., March 11, and will be followed by Jessica Savitch at the 1 p.m. luncheon and Shirley Chisholm at the 7 p.m. banquet. “Tamsen Donner," a drama presentation by the Carolina Regional Theatre, will be performed at the banquet in observance of Women’s History Week. Lt. Gov. Nancy Stevenson is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m., March 12, and Polly Bergen, at the 12:15 p.m. luncheon. Mrs. Juanita Bryant is executive direvlor of the leadership program in the Council on the Status of Women in the N.C. Department of Admini.stration and is conference coordinator. “This conference marks an end and a beginning." Mrs. Bryant said, “It celebrates the successful conclusion of local leadership conferences in each county and region in the state, and it focuses attention on the ‘future agenda’ and on further political, personal and economic development of women.” The conference is open to all women. Church met on Tuesday night, F'eb. 16th at the home of Mrs. David Mills. President Susan Mills oi)ened the meeting with a devotion on “Faith”. She em|)hasized that “there are so many things in our lives that God will take care of for us - if we just realize that we must have faith enough to place tho.se needs in His hands". Prayer requests were given with prayer being lead by the person presenting the special request. Plans were finalized for the American Cancer Society Luncheon which was catered by the W. A. on Wednesday, Feb. 24th. President Mills announc ed that plans also needed to be made and overnight arrangemeats confirmed for those planning to attend the W. A. Retreat in Wilson the weekend of .March oth. Women’s Auxiliary l>ii\ will be held oh Mai‘ch 28th with Mrs. Margarette Russell of Falcon. N. ('. as the special si)eakeV. Dorothy I’illingame The men of the church have been working on the inside of the Fellowship building this month. They will be having their men’s Fellowship meet ing Monday night, March 1. The Ladies’ Auxiliary will meet Tuesday night, March 2, at 7:30. Mr. and Mrs. George Fillingame enjoyed attending revival ser vices Saturday night at the Faulkland Church of God. The good news from the Word for today comes from Philippians 4:4-9. “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say. Rejoice. Let your moder ation be known unto all men. Mrs. Marietta Fulcher opened the meeting with each saying a sentence prayer, request, or praise. Mrs. Fulcher read Romans 8:28-39. She talked on being; your ownself. M rs. Drake read a story By ALMA DRAKE Correspondent about a young girl who was a Christian but in college started drinking and became an alcoholic. Her Youth Leader realized what was happening to her and really held her up in prayer, and eventually she was delivered and rededicated her life back to Christ. Miss Marcy Casey dismi.sscd with a prayer. .Mrs. (ieorge Franklin .McLawhorn Mills - McLawhorn Wedding Grifton United Methodist Church was the setting for the double ring ceremony of Teresa (Rita) Mills and George Franklin McLawhorn Sunday, February 14, 1982 at 2:00 p.m. The bride wore a lovely ivory chantilly lace gown, fashioned with a deep “V” neckline. It featured a pleated lace capelet which also formed the sleeves. The soft flowing sunburst pleated skirt was bordered in lace. The bride wore a two-tiered, rolled-edge circle veil attached to a halo of silk blossoms and roses. She carried a bouquet of red silk roses. The bride’s attendants were Miss Pam Labusohi, Matron of Honor, and Miss Wanda Mills, Maid of Honor. Each wore a formal gown of wine polyester knit featuring a raised waistline, pleated skirt, and multi-spaghetti straps. The gowns were fashioned with a capelet of sheer polyester and a banded neckline of lace. In their hair each wore a halo of wine silk flowers, and each carried three silk roses. Miss Krystal Mills was the Flower Girl. She wore a wine polyester organza gown with ruffled front and back Neckline, capelet sleeves, and flared skirt with a flounced hem. She wore a halo of wine silk flowers in her hair and carried a white basket filled with assorted silk flowers. The groom’s attendants were Dr. Robert Labusohi and Glenn Mills. Miss Judy Jones of Ayden was the Organist. The “Wedding Prayer” and “Love Me Tender” were solos by Rev. Bruce Jones of Ayden. Guests were greeted at the register by Miss Sandra Edmundson of Ayden. Mrs. Helen Bradley directed the wedding. The reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George W. McLawhorn. Mr. and Mrs.'James Daniels greeted the guests and Mr. and Mrs. Snodie S. Haddock said good-byes. Mrs. Wanda Wilhelm and Mrs. Wanda Tilley were serving attendants. Miss Mills is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis N. Mills of Ayden. She attended school at D.H. Conley and is an employee of McGraw-Edison of Greenville. She is the great-granddaughter of Mrs. Semmie Wiggins of Vanceboro. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Franklin McLawhorn of Grifton. He attended school at Ayden-Grifton and is a supervisor at James Enterprises of Grifton. He is the grandson of Mrs. Sadie McLawhorn and of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Powell, both of Vanceboro. After a trip to Florida, the couple will reside at Riverview Estate in Greenville.
