Pirate Pondering 50 Years Ago in Pirate Basketball: Only ten players made up the first East Carolina team in 1931- 32. Eight of the ten are still living, five within 40 minutes of Greenville. Bill Barker, deceased, scored the first official points in ECU basketball history. Noting The Tar Heels After 24 games North Carolina is shooting 54.3 percent from the field as a team. If the Tar Heels can maintain that remarkable pace they will set a new school record. The 1977 team currently holds the school record for shooting percentage with a mark of 53.7. ' In Carolina’s past games the Tar Heels have hit 275 of 492 shots from the floor. That’s a sizzling percentage of 55.9 Carolina, by the way, entered the current season with a string of 11 straight years in which the Tar Heels have shot at least 52 percent from the floor. Carolina’s individual leaders are Sam Perkins at 60.8 and James Worthy at 56.4. Pete Daugherty Daugherty Wins A First - Staff Writer In the District Future Farmers of America Federation held last week at West Craven High School, Pete Daugherty won first place in the FFA Creed Contest. His competition was three students from other area schools. The presentation had to be memorized and presented with emphasis and sincerity. Pete made his presentation before the judges and evidently put the emphasis in the right place and convinced the judges he was sincere about the FFA Creed. Pete is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Gene Daugherty of Route 1, Box 45, Dover, N.C. Mr. Henry Pasour and Mr. Melvin Bright are FFA Advisors for WCHS. North Pitt Shoots Down Title Hopes Of Eagles By GLEN SEAMSTER Sports Editor AYDEN-GRIFTON—The Eagles of West Craven saw any hope of a title shot down last Friday night as the Panthers of North Pitt defeated WestCraven, 47- ■ 31 in overtime in the semi-finals of the District 2,3-A Tournament. In the other semi-final, the D.H. Conley Vikings defeated Greene Central to advance on to the finals. The Eagles could not seem to buy a basket as it seemed like nothing would fall for them even in the overtime period as North Pitt outscored them 16-0. After a low scoring first quarter. West Craven looked as if they were going to pull away as they opened an 8 point lead 20-12 at the half. Linwood Harris opened the third quarter with a slam dunk which got the West Craven fans going. But they watched their lead drop down to only 2 points, 24-22 with 1:53. The reason for this could be because the Eagle’s two big men were sitting on the bench with 4 fouls. By the end of the quarter, the Panthers cut the lead to 1, 25-24. North Pitt took their first lead 30-29 with 2:41 left. They upped their lead to 31-29 on a free throw. West Craven’s Wayne Becton sent the game into overtime as he connected on a jumpshot with :02 seconds left. But then things just fell apart for the Eagles as Norman Becton and Ronnie Bellamy fouled out and the Panthers connected on two three points play and two baskets togive them a 41-31 lead. North Pitt added 2 more goals plus two free throws to make the final score 47-31. West Craven shot a low 25% from the floor, hitting 12 of 44 shots and from the free throw line 7 of 16 for 41%, while the Panthers were 42% from the floor and 54% from the foul line. The Eagles finished their season with a 16-5 record and second in the Coastal 3-A Conference. WCMS Club The West Craven Middle School Library Club met in the media center with Mrs. Jordan and Mr. Sadler. The meeting was called to order by President Deleria Davis. Chris Butler, Pennie Wright, and Kimberly McCoy presented to the Library Club some of the projects Mrs. Oakley’s Language arts class did on the book “Great Expectations”. This book Library News was written by Charles Dickens. A new type film called the “U” film was presented to us. Everyone in the club was given a planning sheet and a book to get ideas from. With this we started planning our very own “U” film. Many completed their filmstrips and presented them on the screen to the club members. Many good ideas were pre- sended. & Mary Dinkier #36 ECAC-South Tournament GREENVILLE, N.C.—East Carolina University opens its second basketball season, Thursday, the ECAC-South Tournament at The Scope in Norfolk Va.
