Carolina Notes
CHAPEL HILL, N. C.-Carolina was the only school
in the nation to finish in the Top Ten this year in both
football and men’s basketball.
Dick Crum’s football team was ranked eighth and
ninth in the final wire service polls. Dean Smith’s
basketball squad was ranked number one in both of
the final polls and, of course, went on to capture the
NCAA championship.
This marks the second straight year Carolina has
finished in the Top Ten in both football and
basketball. The Tar Heels were ninth and 10th in the
final 1980 football polls and sixth in the 1980-81
basketball rankings. Only Notre Dame managed to
equal that same feat last year.
When guard Jimmy Black took the court against
Georgetown in the NCAA championship game, it
marked the 127th game of his Tar Heel career. That’s
the most games in which any Carolina player has
ever taken part. A1 Wood held the old record of 126.
Black also took part in more victories than any
player in Carolina or Atlantic Coast Conference
history.
Carolina’s 63-62 victory over Georgetown last
Monday pushed the Tar Heels’ record to 105-24 in
Black’s four years in Chapel Hill. Black played in 104
of those victories. He missed two games, a victory and
a defeat, in his sophomore year because of the death
of his mother.
Carolina’s 105 victories in the past four seasons are
the most any ACC school has ever had in a four-year
stretch. The 61 wins the Tar Heels have had in the
last two seasons are also an all-time two-year high for
an ACC team.
James Worthy finished his junior season with
career totals of 1,219 points. 620 rebounds and 208
assists. The only other Carolina players to score 1,200
points, grab 600 rebounds and have 200 assists in
their careers were Larry Miller, Charlie Scott,
Bobby Jones, Walter Davis, and Mike O’Koren.

FFA Land Judging
Meet
South Lenoir High School was the site of the 28th
North Carolina FFA Land Judging Meet on April 3,
1982. Forty FFA teams competed for an expense-
paid trip to the National Land Judging Meet to be
held May 5-6 in Oklahoma City. Plaques and other
awards were also provided for first and second place
teams in each of the eight FFA districts as well as to
high scoring individuals.
The State Land Judging Meet provides an
opportunity for FFA members to demonstrate their
knowledge and understanding of soil characteristics
as well as the uses and limitations of land for both
agricultural and urban purposes.
The Meet is sponsored by the North Carolina
Bankers Association and Carolina Power and Light
Company in cooperation with the North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction, the North
Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, the Soil
Conservation Service and the North Carolina Soil
and Water Conservation Commission.
Representing this area was the West Craven FFA
Chapter from West Craven High School. Team
members include Paul Edwards, Kaye Brown, Lee
Kirkman, and Eddie Godley. Their Vocational
Agricultural teacher is Henry Pasour.
