The Academy is owned and operated by Johnnie and Dorothy Wetherington. You can find this family on any day busy with their various chores which include care of 62 horses, daily training sessions of almost 140 students each week, and the general daily chores of a fine riding academy. The Academy has rating shows, a riding program, teaches horsemanship, trains for fox hunts, and hunter pacing training. The age group is 7 and up for all types of training. Some of the younger trainees have done very well with horsemanship. For instance, two 10 year olds have done outstanding. Last year Amy Anderson placed 2nd in state (Continued on page 2) Mayor L. D. Celebration A Success Many citizens from all areas of Craven County came to Cove City to help them celebrate their Silver Anniversary on Saturday, April 24. Activity was in ‘ gear by 10 o’clock as citizens crowded in to Cove City Town Hall to view the many displays of art and crafts of the area. Probably, the most popular display was the pictures of people and buildings of the old days. Mayor L. D. Davis and his Aldermen were on hand to cut the beautiful Silver Anniversary cake. Mayor Davis sliced into the cake as if he had been well trained for the' job at hand. The citizens enjoyed punch and cake. They also enjoyed getting in small groups, with their favorite political candidate, of which they were there in numbers, to talk about the latest development in the politics. The Rescue Squad put on a big feed at 11 o’clock of delicious barbequed pork and chicken. Those eating the meal with the Rescue Squad were entertained with music from West Craven High School’s Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. Joe Sizemore. 'The afternoon was filled with music, speeches, and just plain “thanks” for coming and making Cove City’s 25th Anniversary celebration truly a fine success. Chopsticks at Farm Life (photo by Richard Cannon) During the lunch hour on April 21st, Farm Life Elementary School experienced a “Touch of the Orient” with a complete oriental meal. The idea was conceived by our lunchroom manager, Mrs. Paulette Smith, from a study Mrs. Barbara Daniels’ 4th grade class was doing on the Orient. On entering the lunchroom many changes could be seen. Mrs. Daniels’ class made colorful paper lanterns to gp on each table and huge beautiful fans which decorated the walls. The menu was written in Chinese symbols on the bulletin board and a beautiful oriental tapestry (furnished by Jim Wray, 4th grader) hung from the tray-return window. Other decorative oriental plates, jars and flowers were furnished by members of the faculty. A delicious menu of Sweet and Sour pork or Teriyaki chicken, steamed rice, stir-fried vegetables, congealed fruit salad, roll, almond cookie, juice or milk was served. Each student was given wooden chopsticks with which to eat. (A spoon was also provided for those who had too much trouble natiuiing Uie cnupsticKs:^ Many unusual actions (photo by Richard Cannon) could be observed by those using or trying to use the chopsticks. Everyone found them to be a fun experience. The students were delighted when told they could keep the chopsticks. Several visitors enjoyed the meal with us: Mrs. Martha Smith, NBCC Lunchroom Supervisor, her secretary, Mrs. Inez Jones, Mr. Bobby Hood, Assistant Lunchroom Supervisor, his secretary, Mrs. Sheila Ireland and Mrs. Virginia (joldstein. Regional Director from Jacksonville. The faculty and students were encouraged to dress in the oriental style. Miss Rebecca Hurdle, the librarian, dazzled everyone in her black kimono with red print. Mrs. Smith said the students showed their appreciation by personal comments to her and her staff. Letters and poems of thanks were written by Miss Just’s 5th grade class. If you missed the oriental meal this school year, Mrs. Smith said, during National School Lunch Week next October , she’ll have the same menu. So make your plans to be with us. SAYONARA! > i ' r f i
