believing that the ability to drive has
been impaired. A refusal to take the
test is considered to be an admission of
guilt.
The price for being arrested and
convicted of DUI is high, indeed, and
not just financially. Many hometown
newspapers publish the names of
persons arrested for DUI, and almost
all will publish the names of those
convicted for this offense.
This is only the beginning of the real
cost that must be paid. The first
soulshaking jolt comes when the judge
announces his determination. First
offense could net a driver a fine of not
less than $100, and not more than $500,
imprisonment of not more than six
months, or both. Additionally, the N.
C. Department of Motor Vehicles will
revoke the driver’s license.
A person convicted of DUI a second
time within a 10-year period faces an
automatic jail term of not less than
three days, nor more than one year. In
addition, he or she faces a possible fine
of not less than $200 nor more than
$500, and a loss of driving privileges
for four years.
“It’s easy to avoid all these
problems,” says Col. Guy, of the
Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
“Just don’t get behind the wheel of a
vehicle after you have started
drinking, no matter how much you’ve
had, and don’t get into a car with
anyone who has been drinking.”
