Pag# 4, W##t Craven Highlight#, May U, 1982 Area Students Attend ECU Scholarship Weekend Tommy White, a junior at West Craven High School, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond T. White, Cove City was among the nearly 100 high school students from 42 North Carolina counties who attended East Carolina University’s Scholars Weekend, held recently. The visiting students, all juniors, were given a closeup view of the ECU campus, the academic programs and student activities. They attended films, concerts, athletic events, and attended classes and discussion sessions in the academic areas in which they had expressed an interest. The weekend was highlighted by a Sunday evening banquet at which Dr. John M. Howell, ECU’s Acting Chancellor, delivered the featured address. Scholars Weekend is held annually to acquaint high school scholars with the campus and the academic scholarships that are available to qualified students. (ECU News Bureau Photo) ECU Students Win In State Event Kenneth Augustus Lancaster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Lancaster of Vanceboro was among the thirty-nine outstanding students in the East Carolina University School of Business that were inducted into the ECU chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society in business and administration recently. ’The new members include residents of 17 North Carolina counties, 10 other states and West Germany. Beta Gamma Sigma is the national scholastic society recognized by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business and has chapters only at campuses with accredited business schools. Its purposes are to encourage and reward scholarship and accomplishment among students of business and administration, to promote the advancement of education in business and to foster integrity in the conduct of business operations. At present. Beta Gamma Sigma has a total membership of more than 100,000 persons. To be eligible for membership, a student must rank in the upper five percent of a junior class, top 10 percent of a senior class or top 20 percent of students working toward master’s degrees. William E. Cleve, III, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cleve of Vanceboro, was part of a team of medical technology students from the East Carolina University School of Allied Health and Social Professions that won first place honors in the “Student Bowl” competition sponsored by the N. C. Society for Medical Technology. ECU’iB winning team included Karen Porter formerly of Fayetteville, now of Nunica, Mich.; Ulla Godwin of Ahoskie; and Amy Pentland of Charlotte. The event was held at Forsyth Hospital, Winston- Salem, and was designed to test student participants’ knowledge of the medical technology profession and skills. Competing tpams represented Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill, Moses Cone Hospital, Rex Hospital, Western Carolina University, Charlotte Memorial Hospital, Forsyth Hospital and Bowman- Gray School of Medicine. As state winners, the ECU team will represent North Carolina in the May 22 regional competition against teams from South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. (Big House) Gaines, Sr., 68, of Winston-Salem State University, the winningest coach in college basketball with a record of 668 wins against 288 losses, will address the LCC Athletic Awards Banquet at King’s Restaurant at 7 p.m. May 18, according to Athletic Director Pete D. Barnes. A native of Paducah, Ky., Gaines was educated at Morgan State College in Baltimore, Md., where he earned his B.S. degree, and at Columbia University) in New York where he secured his master’s degree. He also has done graduate study at N. Y. University. He is married to the former Clara Berry of McKeesport, Pa., and Annapolis, Md. They have two children - Lisa Gaines McDonald of Los Angeles, Calif., and Clarence Jr., a graduate student at UNC—Chapel Hill. His professional career has centered around his duties at Winston-Salem State where he took over as athletic director in 1946. He has served as head of the Physical Education Department 30 years and as head basketball coach since 1946. His church, Hanes Hosiery Mills and the Sportsman Club each has established a C.E. Gainfes Athletic Award in his honor. ' His honors are legion. He received the CIAA Tournament Outstanding Coaches Award in 1953, 1957,1960,1961,1963, 1966,1970, and 1977, plus the Paul Robeson Award in 1980. Other honors include the Winston-Salem State University Hall of Fame in 1980, CIAA Hall of Fame in 1975, North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 and many others. His coaching has not been limited to basketball but has included track and he Was named CIAA Football Coach of the Year in 1948. Tickets for the banquet are now available at the college and at King’s Restaurant. The event will honor all outstanding athletes at LCC this year and the cheerleaders as well. Barnes said he and Cage Coach Bobby Ray Dawson are “most pleased to have Coach Gaines to address the banquet group on May 18th.” Rep. Lilley Rep. Daniel T. Lilley Files Representative Daniel T. Lilley, D-Lenoir filed for reelection on May 6, 1982 to the N.C. House of Itepresentatives for the 3rd House District made up of Craven, Lenoir and Pamlico Counties. ^p Lilley will be seeking his eighth term in the N.C. House. He serves as chairman. Legislative Redistricting, Vice Chairman Finance Committee, Vice Chairman I^cal Government No. 1. Committee and a member of the committee on Agriculture, Alcoholic Reverse Control, Insurance, Transportation and Wildlife. p.
