Vanceboro Softball
By RITA LEWIS
Softball is gaining quick popularity in the
Vanceboro area. The teams have been “warming up”
by playing scrimmage games. From the. looks of
things, Pugh Distributing may be the team to watch
this year. On May 11, Pugh beat Garris #2 by a score
of 7-6. Later that week the two teams tried it again.
This time Pugh defeated them 21-8. With a score of
22-9 Pugh showed M&B a thing or two. Pretty
impressive!!
V&J Billiards got off to a slow start by losing 9-8 to
the Senators. To avenge that loss, V&J went on to
conquer Ron’s Body Shop by a margin of 9-6.
All-in-all, the teams are shaping up really nice.
Win or lose, these guys are all real winners-for the
effort and time they give to their teams and to our
community. Regular season started Monday, May 17,
so why not stop by and support your favorite team.

West Craven’s “Marching Eagles”
Marching: Eag:les Close
Season With Impressive
Wins
By PATRICIA HADDOCK
The West Craven “Marching Eagles” ended their
competition season this weekend on top. The band
traveled to Pleasure Island to participate in a parade
competition against a field of eight bands from the
surrounding area. The parade went well and the
band came away with two of the four trophies
awarded; 1st place colorguard. Drum Majorette and
Drum Line. The entire band received an award for
2nd place. Just % a point kept West Craven from
being the top band.
The parade was not the only thing the band
members enjoyed. Friday afternoon, the band had an
educational visit to Ft. Fisher, a civil war museum,
and also, to the North Carolina Marine Resource
Center. When the band arrived at the hotel, they
were treated to a hot dog Supper, courtesy of Mr.
Dwayne Barlow and the Band Boosters.
Saturday, after the parade results were in, the
exuberant band members showed their excitement
by throwing Mr. Sizemore into the pool. Although,
Mr. Sizemore was completely soaked, he was still
very proud of the band. That afternoon, the band took
it easy by taking advantage of the beach, the pool, and
other activities available to them.
Sunday morning, the band loaded up the buses and
