n {* t; Pagt 12, West Cravtn HIghlighta, May 27,1982 Don’t Burn That Straw JOHN W. SMITH, JR. District Conservationist To most farmers wheat straw is an obstacle that has to be removed before the soybeans can be planted. The straw drags on the planters and cloggs up the machine. Strike a match and you can sent it up in smoke. Straw is crop residue which becomes organic matter for the soil under natural conditions. Most soils need additional organic matter. Organic matter increases the holding capacity of the soil for water and nutrients. It improves the tilth of the soil by preventing packing and crusting of the soil. Discing the straw once will usually leave plenty of residue on the soil surface to protect the soil from erosion. This will usually reduce the straw enough so that most no-till planters will do the job of planting. Wheat will usually produce 100 lbs. straw per bushel of grain. Fields that produce 50 bushels of wheat will yield 5000 lbs. straw. Fields that produce 25 bushels of wheat will produce 2500 lbs. straw. For “No-Till” 1,000 lbs. of straw needs to remain on the soil surface for protection from "erosion. Soil moisture is usually critical at soybean planting time. Discing the soil will dry the soil out. Leaving the straw on the land will hold the moisture in. Soybeans will germinate in 3 or 4 days if the moisture is right. If it is too dry, soybeans will have to wait for the next shower.
