This day was remembered by the Craven County Veterans Council and New Bern National Cemetery. Sunday was the day of preparation and Monday was the day that the citizens gathered to pay their respect for those that had served their country so well. Sunday over 200 citizens visited the National Cemetery in New Bern. They graciously helped the Caretaker, George Fulmore, mark the 7000 graves rith small American flags. Mr. '’ulmore said it was something to see as the citizens went about the job and completed it in less than one and half hours. Each grave in the cemetery is adorned with a U.S Flag to symbolize a free nation under God. It was noted by the director, Mr. Oliver Creswick, that the New Bern National Cenietery is host to over 3000 visitors per year. He further stated that the cemetery has no Medal of Honor recipients interred; it has males and females, union arid no confederate soldiers interred. New Bern National Cemetery was established in 1867, but has dates of death on some stones of 1862 ■ which is because the remains from other areas have been interred there. Four states. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts have erected war monuments in the cemetery. There are twenty sections in the cemetery and nineteen of these are in use. Space in the New Bern National Cemetery will be used up by May 1983 if the average of 110 per year continues to hold. Then it will be a closed National Cemetery. Plans are underway to acquire property adjacent to the present cemetery. Monday’s program carried the following message. The significance of Memorial Day is amplified by those who will always hold dear the truths of this great Nation. The wreaths that are placed here today are symbols of the espirit and love of country that veterans organizations perpetuate in our society today. We remember: we are grateful: and, we live and work today for the same ideals for which so many Americans paid the supreme sacrifice. The spirit of our War Dead lives forever with us. They are remembered today by each of us. The following were introduced as Gold Star Parents: Mrs. Lena Caton, Mrs. Margaret Conderman, Mrs. Mae Herring, and Mr. & Mrs. James Laughinghouse. The assembled group saw the Presentation of colors, participated in the pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. They heard the Gettysburg Address and the speakers, Lt. Col. J.D. Haynes and Senator Joseph Thomas. There was a Placing of Memorial Wreaths Ceremony after which the benediction and rifle salute were heard. The program was closed by the sound of Taps. Mr. Creswick stated, “The participation by members of the veterans organizations in this observance is an inspiration to all Americans.
