State University Squeaky floors in your home may be caused by sag ging joists, which have be come crooked after drying completely. But, according to Dr. Glenda Herman, extension housing specialist at North Carolina State University, there are several solutions to this problem. Two solutions involving the joists are to place 1X4 inch strips snugly against the bottom of the subfloor, nailed to the floor joists or to use wooden wedges driven between the subfloor and the top of the floor joists. "A third solution may be the use of screws which are driven from the bottom side of the floor or crawl space through the subfloor into the finished floor," Dr. Herman says. This is possible only where the underside of the floor is accessible. Another common proce dure for correcting squeaking is to drive a nail through the face of the flooring into the subfloor, preferably into the floor joist. Drive the nail near the tongue edge of the floor ing strip, then set and fill the hole. West Crflven Highlights, June 10,1982, Page 7 FORTBARNWELL -HIGHLIGHTS- The Bulletin By MRS. B.H. The senior Class of West Craven High School is looking forward to the great march on Friday night at 8:00 p. m. This week will probably seem long to them after being in school for twelve years. Most of them have high hopes to make a new start in life. Such possibilities include jobs, college,Army, Navy, marriage, and all areas of seeking a fortune. These students come from many communities of Craven County and much credit is due to parents and teachers who helped them reach that avaricious goal. Hats off to all the graduates! Sorry, the news did not reach the press in time last week, and the holiday was just in time for a break in the regular routine of business. Keep on reading—there was lots of news from our neighbors.
