Meetings AND THE WALLS CAME TUMBLING DOWN—Last week the old Farm Life School Main Building made her last stand and former students would have been proud of how hard it was for a seven jman crew using a Drott-40 ackhoe to shake her 'foundation. Each dump truck load carried away weighs about 6-7 tons and at 60 loads a day, it will take about two weeks tg do it all. The old cafeteria and connecting hallway took about 26 hours to bring down. FARM LIFE SCHOOL-circa 1925-1982 >wn, .. .And Destruction Unplanned SIZZLIN’JUKE JOINT It was 2:45 a. m. Sunday morning when the Vanceboro Fire Depart ment got the call about Teddy’s Playhouse going up in flames and it was 30 minutes later as the flames subsided that Eddie Hardy, Jr., who lives next door to the burned playhouse, sur veyed the damage. The fire was brought under control within an hour and destruction was total. In an interview Mon day night Sergeant Stanley Kite of the Craven County Sheriff’s Department corrected a mistake made in a front page Sun-Journal report on the murder of Andy Lee Whitley of Vance boro. A paragraph in the Sun-Journal read, “After the shooting, Whitley was taken td Teddy’s Play house to await an ambulance. The fire at the bar broke out shortly after Whitley was taken to the hospital.” After reading this Sergeant Kite said, “This is not correct and the fact is that Whitley was still lying in the road at the place where he was shot when I found him and that is where the ambulance picked him up and transported him to Craven County Hospital at about 8 p. m. “It wasn’t until 2:46 a. m. that a fire was reported at Teddy’s. “The only possibility I have at this time of the fire being connected with the shooting is that Whitley was in a quarrel at Teddy’s Playhouse with Milton Harris, son of J. W. Harris and that Playhouse manager Calvin Lancaster got into it and tried to break it up and there were some words exchanged be tween some of the Whitley brothers and Milton who works at Teddy’s.• The Vanceboro Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting June 12, 1982, in the Town Hall at 8:00 p. m. After review Alderman Whitley made a motion_to accept the contract. Motion was seconded by Alderman Tyre and carried. In Cove City, Town Clerk Evelyn Hood said, “At the July 5th meeting we discussed .the three inquiries received about library expansion from L. A. Downey, R. H. Brachner, and Rodman Williams. “Ed Nott was hired as Cove City auditor and Tom Crawford was hired as an on-call town lawyer. “The board decided to get both liability insur ance and a front-end loader with a basket for the town tractor.” THE BOYS OF SUMMER—It’s bombs away if not a belly-flop or worse for Don Lilly, Alvin Hoell, and Roy Lee Nobles as Kim Arrington settles for a front row balcony view of the big splash about to occur. This Sunday action took place along Swift Creek bordering the property of Jason Lilly in Vanceboro. Details From Vanceboro Mayor Jimmie Morris Vanceboro Mayor Jimmie L. Morris said the following after the monthly town meeting Monday: “We are now advertising for a police chief and will do so until August 1st. It’s hard to get applicants for a small town and prior experience is almost necessary. The Sheriff’s Department is helping out now and doing a good job.” On another subject he said, “When the fire department fills up someone’s swimming pool the procedure is that they are supposed to notify the town how many gallons are needed and collect for the water before it’s put into the swimming pools. “Swimming pool owners don’t have to pay sewer charges this way and it would take two to three days to fill up a good sized pool usingahouse tap which is only three-fourths inches.” Question of the Week: How does the tobacco crop of 1982 look compared to recent years? '.mi* — — Buddy Jones of Vanceboro It’s growed right good and if it rains then it’ll fill back out on top. make more pounds. It’s about a week early and the dry weather ^ksure makes it come off right fast. The ^ j^narvester keeps me goin’ full blast." Charles Booker of Asbury Road “I believe this year is a good ’baccer year and the rain come just in time to give some height to it. I handled some leaves this mornin’ looked tremendous, better than last year.” Harold Jones of Clayroot “I have 125 acres with my brother-in-law and it’s holdin’ pretty well growth wise but it’s got to thicken up if it’s going to be better than last year. It’ll take about eight weeks to harvest. I better get a high price.” Leroy Huggins of Ft. Barnwell “My 25 acres got a better size and better color than this time last year thanks to more rain. I need a high price like $2.00 just to get out because of these risin’ costs on everything.” K i * •t '* f
