Page 6. West Craven HlghUghta, July 22; 1982 Sports Highlights Two out of town teams and two local teams qualified for the state tournament as a result of placing in the top four spots in last weekend’s USSS A sanctioned First Annual VSL Invitational held at Farm Life Field. The two local teams were the Senators and Pugh’s, finishing third and fourth respectively. The tournament was won by Uniworth of Greenville and Phillip-Dunn of Bayboro came in second. It was disappointing to see two out of town teams in the finale and several area residents said they would rather have rooted for their worst enemy playing on a local team. Details on the four out of town teams that played are as follows: Antioch is in second place in the New Bern League with a record of 10-4. The Antioch coach called the Senators just another team before they played in the opening game and lost to the Senators by 13-4. Bill’s of Morehead City did not show and were disqualified because they had placed in a class C WON GAME, LOST MARBLES-Garris #2 player David Finer was literally driven up the wall after his team won an extra inning game against Ron’s by the score of 4-3 during the weekend VSL Tournament. When asked to explain his behavior David said he was just pickin’ at Jim Madures who was sitting in the bleachers. tournament previously and the VSL Invitational was class D. Phillip-Dunn Logging of Pamlico County has a regular season record of 13-3 and is in second place in their league. The tournament winner was Uniworth of Greenville and they are strictly a tournament team, VSL Tournament(Double Elimination) DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE, DOUBLE YOUR RUNS—Gator’s baserunners Eddie Garris and A1 Wade score one right after the other in a tournament game against Hatteras of New Bern. Uniworth tries to play in a tournament every weekend, raising money in different ways, for example, by raffling off a shotgun. Hatteras of New Bern is also a strictly tournament team, made up of players off of two league teams, and they have won two of the eight tournaments they have played in this year. The MVP award went to Uniworth pitcher Keith “Wolfman” Gould of Greenville. Before his first game coach Ron Beaman said, “I am using a different strategy for this tournament than I use during regular season play by picking up other ballplayers and shifting around my regular team members.” After Caton won their first round game coach Milan Ipock said, “We shoulda been hittin’ like this all year and we coulda easily been a .500 ballclub.” Caton beat M&B by 15-5 but then lost their next two games in the double elimination tournament. Tournament Director Bobby Cole said that a VSL all-star team would probably do quite well in any class C tournament. Bobby also announced a class D tournament coming up in New Bern and he can be contacted at 244-0059 for information. Just before the tournament began Umpire Don Ahlers picked the Senators to win the tournament but added that Bill’s would be his choice if they had showed up. Don went to high school in Quebec, Canada and at the age of 16 in 1942 he was signed by the Cincinati Reds to play professional baseball but soon after an auto accident left his leg damaged and he turned to a career with the U.S. Marines. U.S.S.S.A. rules require a slow pitch to have an arc between three feet and ten feet. Several illegal pitches were thrown during the tournament and automatic balls were called. ij 'jjiBJ'lOBfi * • . li TWO PODS IN A PICKUP-By Sunday afternoon, all tournament director Bobby Cole and umpire Pat Patrick could do was to lay out.
