Aldermen Angry
Vanceboro Tovm Board gets tough on meter tampering
by Rick Cannon
Special to the Highiights
The Vanceboro Board of Aldermen
lashed out at persons supected of
tampering with their water meters
during its monthly meeting Monday
night, August 2nd. After hearing that
several meters appeared to have been
tampered with, the board warned that
in the future anyone whose water meter
has been violated or tampered with will
be prosecuted. Mayor Jimmie Morris
emphasized that no exceptions will be
made to this policy. “This situation is
disgusting,” Morris indicated, “we have
to put a stop to it.” It is very easy to
detect meter tampering. Each time a
meter is read, the reader checks the
plastic seal on the meter. A broken seal
is a clear indication of a violation.
Old buildings
Old buildings on Main Street and
College Avenue were again topics of
discussion. During the past year, much
progress has been made in either
repairing or removing old, abandoned
buildings in Vanceboro. Two buildings
that remain are the Taylor building on
Main Street and the former Ada
Lancaster residence on College Avenue.
Alderman Alton Whitley volunteered to
check on the status of the Taylor
buildinj. He indicated that it was his
understanding that the owners of the
building had decided to demolish the
structure. Mayor Morris directed that a
letter be sent to the heirs of Mrs. Ada
Lancaster requiring them to improve or
remove the house on College Avenue
within sixty days or the Town will
recommend to the Craven County Fire
Mar^aU that the house be demolished
and the lot cleaned up.
Cable TV meeting slated
Tele-National Communications, Inc.,
a Pensacola, Florida based firm, has
contacted the Town of Vanceboro about
the prospects of installing cable-
television here. The Board voted to meet
with representatives of the corporation

Business teacher leaves after 20 years
Stilley retires
Mrs. Maggie Gatlin Stilley will not return to her
usual typing classes when the bell rings for the 1982-
83 school year. She is retiring from public school
teaching after four years in Pamlico County Schools,
15 years with Craven County Schools and one year
with New Bern-Craven County Schools.
Mrs. Stilley graduated from Farm Life High
School in the Class of 1949. She received her BS
degree in Business Education from East Carolina
University. While at ECU she was an active member
of the Beta Kappa Chapter of Pi Omega Pi, an
honorary business fraternity, serving as historian for
one year.
She recalled one of her most remembered
experiences was working on a committee with Dr.
James L. White, Father of Future Business Leaders
Association, to write the first handbook for the State
FBLA.
Mrs. Stilley worked very hard to keep an active
FBLA in the schools where she taught. When she
found no FBLA Chapter at Farm Life School in 1957,
she got busy and organized the Chapter. This
Chapter is still active at West Craven High School
where she taught for the last eleven years.
She stated that she is thankful for the opportunity
to meet so many young people and to have some
influence on their life. She leaves her classroom with
the feeling that the time spent there has been very
worthwhile to her and the many students she has
taught through the years.
Mrs. Stilley has set a good example for her fellow
workers by being a member of many professional
organizations such as Association of Classroom
Teachers: Local, State, and National Education
Association. In local club activity she was sponsor of
the school’s Bible Club.
Mrs. Stilley is married to Billy Stilley and they'
have two children, Todd and Beth.
The Stilleys live in Askin on Rt. 1, Box 214, Ernul,
N. C. 28527.
