Cannon, P. 0. Box S77, Vanceboro,^.C. 28586. * THIS WEEK: We focus on education. School teachers of the early 1800’s had a quite different educational system. One Turner Nelson who lived in Northern Craven County near the Craven, Pitt and Beaufort County lines had the following contract. Dated July 20, 1823. Found in Roach Family Papers in East Carolina University Library. “These articles of agreement made between Turner Nelson as teacher of W.Cannon reading, writing, and arithmetic and the undersigned as Employers. The said Nelson doth obligate to teach reading, writing and arithmetic in the School House near Piney Grove Mill for the term of six months for and in/consideration of the sum of Six Dollars to me in hand paid by the Subscribers for each and every achollar, signed opposite our respective names three dollars to be paid at the expiration of three months for every schollar and die other three in the expiration of six months and the said Nelson to board himself." Mrs. Colie Miller loves her blueberry bushes and so do her neighbors. She says about twenty bushels of blueberries have been picked from the seven bushes her husband planted about ten years ago. Mrs. Miller lets neighbors or anyone pick the berries. “This has been an abundant year for blueberries due to the rain. Mrs. Colie Miller Probably no one will agree with me, but the past July was a dry one. I was only able to come up with a 6.2 inch total rainfall in my bucket in downtown New Bern. This is 2.0 inches below the average rainfall for New Bern in July which is 8.2 inches. A Dry July By John W. Smith If you think this past July was wet, chances are August will also seem wet to you. The average rainfall for New Bern in August is 7.0 inches. September is a little less with 6.7 inches. We will probably have to wait, until October to get dried out with only an average precipitation of 3.2 inches. As all the sports fans say “Wait until next year for a wet July.” We are long over due.
