A family yard sale is a typical sight as you travel
along the highways and byways of America. In
above picture we can see Donnie Toler, Jennifer
Toler, Diane Wilson, Russell Toler and Lester
Toler have their wares set up beside Highway 17
near Askin.
Foot
Injury
Lester Toler of Piney Neck sustained a laceration
of the foot while placing a yard sale sign on a post
beside Highway 17. Someone riding by the post had
taken careful aim or just got lucky and planted a
glass bottle against the post. The glass shattered and
fell to the ground among the grass. Lester wandered
across the grass to hang the sign and to his surprise
he stepped on the remains of the bottle and required
five stitches.
This costly accident could have been avoided if
someone had been more thoughtful and placed the
bottle in a wayside trash container. “COME
AMERICA TOSS IN, NOT AT.”
Wachovia Offers Student Loans
The College Foundation Inc. and Wachovia Bank
and Trust Company jointly announced today that the
bank will provide up to $52 million to the Foundation
for student loans during the 1982-83 academic year.
According to Duffy L. Paul, executive director of
the College Foundation, the money will be used to
fund about 20,000 loans to students under the North
Carolina Insured Student Loan Program. Some
3,000 loans to parents of dependent undergraduate
students can also be made under a new parent loan
program expected to be operational next spring.
“It became apparent that money market conditions
would prevent our obtaining the needed funds
through the normal channel of revenue bonds issued
Jby the State Education Assistance Authority,” Paul
said. “It was too late to put together a multi-bank
financing package, so we were delighted to have
Wachovia step in and commit these funds.”
John G. Medlin, Jr., chief executive officer of
Wachovia, said, “North Carolina is most fortunate to
have an agency like the College Foundation to
coordinate and admiitister a variety of student loan
programs-Many individuals who would otherwise be
unable tor finance their education can attend college
as a result of these programs.”
The N.C. Insured Student Loan Program is
available to qualifying students who are legal
residents of the state enrolled at an eligible
institution and from families with adjusted annual
incomes of less than $30,000; however, exceptions
may be made above that income level for those
meeting certain stricter needs criteria.
Loan applications are available only from the
College Foundation at 1307 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh,
27605 and must be submitted for processing through
the financial aid office of the school where the
student is enrolled. “We are now processing
applications for the fall term,” Paul said, “so it is not
too late for students to apply.”
Traffic Accidents Decrease
In 1981 the number of people killed in North
Carolina as a result of motor vehicle accidents was
1,497. This figure was down by 1.4 percent from
1980.

‘'Old American Spirit”
The “old American Spirit,” alive and well in the
80’s, is demonstrated again by a young couple who
are painting and decorating the interior of the
Eastern Carolina Vocational Center-the training
center for handicapped individuals. Bobbie and
Anne Baker are not only contributing their time to
this beautification project, but they are also donating
the materials needed.
Realizing the enthusiasm and interest which may
be generated from this gracious endeaver.
Congressman Walter B. Jones has agreed to christen
the project by painting the first stroke at 10:00 a.m!
on August 26, 1982. This honor belongs to
Congressman Jones since he was the key person
responsible for obtaining the funds to erect the $5.2
million recreation and housing addition to the
Center.
Perhaps others who view the broadcasts or read
about it will.also contribute their time and talents to
make this service facility in our community a
success.

tile countertops. The thin glaze covering the tile will
crack and discolor when exposed to hight heat.
