This is probably why the New Bern Craven County Chamber of Commerce chose to bestow the honor of Individual Community Leadership Award at a recent ceremony in the Tryon Palace gardens. Mrs. Gaskins is a volunteer rescue squad member and is on call at almost any hour. She has traveled over seven hundred miles from her home to the rescue squad office in Vanceboro. She has made over ninety trips to give aid to citizens in trouble. Her volunteer service did not stop with rescue squad duty but she spent four hours each night during the softball games selling concessions out the back of her truck. She stated these were “hard hours” but her service paid off in two ways, refreshments for the fans and over seventeen hundred dollars turned in to the rescue squad treasury. She was proud to serve in the small way to help her community be a better place to live. She says, “you can continue to look for me to be active in service to our community.” Governor Honors Craven County Volunteers Outstanding volunteers in Craven County will be honored by Governor and Mrs. James B. Hunt, Jr-., Tuesday, October 26, in Williamston at the Martin County Auditorium on the Williamston High School Campus. A local selection committee was appointed by the Craven County Involvement Council to choose the top volunteers in their communities. “One of the most important things I do is encourage the concept of volunteerism—people helping each other and being good neighbors,” said Governor Hunt recently regarding the upcoming ceremony. The Governor’s Office of Citizen Affairs (GOCA) worked jointly with each county to coordinate the selection of volunteers. Two other ceremonies are being held to honor volunteers from the Central and Eastern regions. Dr. Charles V. Petty, spokesman and Executive Director of GOCA, said “Governor Hunt is a volunteer himself, and understands that needs are great, but needs can be met as this vital human resource is tapped and mobilized.” These people will also participate in the ceremony: Dr. Leo Jenkins, Chancellor Emeritus of East Carolina University; Ann Stalls of Pitt County, the 1981 Governor’s Statewide Volunteer Award recipient in the Disabled Person Volunteer Category; and Susan Ward of the Gates County Involvement Council. Football Contest Winner Larry Hayes, John F. Kite and Marvin Hall tied for first place in last week’s football contest. They each had identical records and each one picked UNC to win the tiebreaker. In second place was Jeffery Haddock followed by Milo Jenkins in third. Mr. John E. “Bud ” Garris John E. “Bud” Garris received an Individual Outstanding Service Award for benefiting Craven County in a ceremony held last week in the garden of Tryon Palace in New Bern. This award is given by the New Bern-Craven County Chamber of Commerce to citizens who contribute time, work, and talents to better community life in Craven County. Mr. Garris has been very active in the Vanceboro Community with the softball leagues and little league baseball. He sponsored two teams in the Vanceboro Softball League for several seasons. His sons have been active in playing the game. He sponsored one team, the Craven Southern Little League Baseball Team. Mr. Garris is very-proud of his team since they were the area Champions. Mr. Garris did not stop at sponsoring the teams but went further by taking on the giant size job of league president. He was present at all the games. His ear was always open to hear the gripes, praise, and trying to make everyone happy. He worked hard to solve the parking problem for the fans. He furnished his equipment at no cost to clear an area for fan parking. He says money is available to finish the parking lot. He hopes Mr. Jimmy Morris will be able to finish up the grading and rocking before winter sets in. Mr. Morris has been working on the parking problem and hopes, along with Mr. Garris, to have this problem solved very soon. Mr. Garris has been instrumental in getting restroom facilities at the playing field. His inspiration and encouragement accounted for over fifty advertising boards on the fence around the playing field. The money from the sale of the space went to finance the softball season and provide for a parking lot. He stated in his comments: “I have enjoyed the work, and the good people that I have had to work with and I am looking forward to having an even better recreational activity than we had in 1982.”
