I Unemployment Rate Rose ^RALEIGH-The State- total unemployment me rose to 9.3 percent in October. A major contri butor to the rise was Agriculture which lost 16,600 jobs due chiefly to the end of the growing and harvesting season. The rise in unemploy ment came after two months of decline. In September the rate was 8.7 percent and in August it was 9.0 percent. The October rate of 9.3 percent represents 276,300 jobless workers. « Glenn R. Jernigan, irman of the North olina Employment Security Commission, said, “Trad itionally analysts have considered October as a typical month for unemployment evaluation. Seasonal activities such as vacation periods, school recess, summer jobs in agricul ture, etc., are finished for the most part by the end of October. Unfortu nately, the current rise in unemployment may indicate that the econo mic situation is not improving as we had hoped. Our position parallels that of the nation, but we are still below the national unadjusted rate of 9.9 percent in October.” Left to Right: Cindy Arnold, Kathy Zilles, Jane Throwe, James Hardison, Russ Austin, Herbert Thornton, John Burnette, Joseph C.
