Library Club Balloon Launch
West Craven Middle
School Library Club
sponsored a specta
cular balloon launch at
the school on April
18th. The launch was a
coordinated part of a
nation-wide cele
bration of National
Library Week April
17-23.
National Library
Week Balloon Launch
Day is an annual
library promotional
event highlighting the
many valuable mater
ials and services
provided by libraries.
To launch more than
1,000,000 helium-filled
balloons on April 18th
was this year’s Nation
al Library Week goal.

Library, with a second
theme of "Libraries
Touch Your Life.”^
Before launching the
balloons Library Club
members filled the
return name and
address cards to attach
to the many colorful
balloons bearing
printed designs of
"Light Up Your Life-
Read”, and "Love My
Libranr”. The return
The first National
Library Week was
celebrated in 1958
with the slogan "Wake
Up and Read”, with an
additional theme in
1959 of "For a Better-
Read, Better-Informed
card requests anyone
finding the balloon to
please complete the
card and return it to
the Library Club
member by mail. Some
lucky launchers may
have balloons recover
ed from hundreds or
even thousands of
miles away, and
returned to them at
West Craven Middle
School Library.

miles from their
launch sites. One
Launch Day balloon
traveled from Illinois,
on random air cur
rents, and was recov
ered in India; thereby
setting a world record
of 9,200 miles. Be on
the look-out in this area
for balloons arriving
from other launches in
the country.

discovery points of all
whose balloons are
found will be recorded
and miles charted on a
map for distance
traveled prizes, by
Library Club officials:

Girl Scout Troop #482,
Vanceboro, and their
leaders, Mrs. Jackie
Dudley and Mrs. Judie
Freeman, spent last
weekend at Girl Scout
Camp Hardy near
Chocowinity.
While there the
scouts played games,
participated in a craft
class, nature hiked
and the Ranger talked
to them about wild
plants and animals,
plus preparing all
meals.

delegates who attended the ISthannual
convention of the N.C. Association of Educators
in Raleigh April 14, 15, and 16. During this
event, Mr. Johnson had the pleasure to meet and
hear a speech by former U. S. Vice-President
Walter Mondala Mr. Johnson comments that
Mr. Mondale was a very good and appropriate
speaker and Mr Johnson considers that meeting
and speech a highlight of the convention.
