The launch was a coordinated part of a nation-wide cele bration of National Library Week April 17-23. National Library Week Balloon Launch Day is an annual library promotional event highlighting the many valuable mater ials and services provided by libraries. To launch more than 1,000,000 helium-filled balloons on April 18th was this year’s Nation al Library Week goal. America”. This year’s slogan is "Look to Your Library, with a second theme of "Libraries Touch Your Life.”^ Before launching the balloons Library Club members filled the return name and address cards to attach to the many colorful balloons bearing printed designs of "Light Up Your Life- Read”, and "Love My Libranr”. The return The first National Library Week was celebrated in 1958 with the slogan "Wake Up and Read”, with an additional theme in 1959 of "For a Better- Read, Better-Informed card requests anyone finding the balloon to please complete the card and return it to the Library Club member by mail. Some lucky launchers may have balloons recover ed from hundreds or even thousands of miles away, and returned to them at West Craven Middle School Library. One Launch Day balloon traveled from Illinois, on random air cur rents, and was recov ered in India; thereby setting a world record of 9,200 miles. Be on the look-out in this area for balloons arriving from other launches in the country.
