I Pag* 12, Wtofet CnivM Highlight*, April 28,1883 s t \ \ \ i \ r'l •*, i. I* > r Thomas Report By Senator. Joesph Thomas Sen. Joseph E. Thomas, D-Craven, along: with other coastal senators, has introduced Senate Bill 398, which would require increased state monitoring of suspected pollution in coastal shellfish waters. The bill is a direct response to the controversy over recent and total shutdowns of shellfish harvesting by state officials, when pollution was found in certain areas of coastal waters. “In meetings with the Department of Human Resources,” Thomas said, “we found that the closings, while obviously necessary in the polluted areas, could have been greatly curtailed in some harvesting areas. The drawback was that monitoring resources just were not available for officials to guarantee the safety of these areas. This bill is designed to provide those resources— and safety.” “I’m convinced that an intense monitoring program can more quickly respond with individual area closings and avoid statewide shutdowns of this valuable industry,” Thomas said. “Certainly this increased monitoring process can be cost-effective when considered in terms of the tax revenue produced from the commercial fishing and tourist industry.” The bill also instructs state officials to immediately reidentify coastal waters for points of pollution and to open those areas that have been closed as rapidly as possible. Co-sponsors of the bill include Senators Melvin Daniels, D-Pasquotank, A.D. Guy, D-Onslow, and R.C. Soles, D-Columbus. Thomas is chairman of the Senate Committee on Natural and Economic Resources and Wildlife. Signs of the Times In all this rain, I feel sure, there’s a rainbow!
