Typing Contest West Craven High School business educa tion students partici pated in the annual typing contest held at Craven Community College on April 15, 1983. Winners in the advanced division were Ginny Chandler, second place, and Michelle Register, third place. In the beginning division Susan Register placed fourth and Bridget Sutton placed fifth. These students were tested on their produc tion typing skills, timed writings and knowledge of type writing theory. Other participants from West Craven High were Jodie Walker and Denise Fillingame. Jodie Walker West Craven Hisfh Student Makes# Team Miss Jodie Walker, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George Walker, Rt. 6, New Bern journeyed to Chapel Hill for Color Guard try outs for the University of North Carolina’s Color Guard Squad. The competition was with young ladies from high schools throughout North Carolina. Honors are not strange to Miss Walker. She is holder of a varsity letter for cheerleading. Driver’s Education Award, Geometry Award and is listed in Who’s Who Among High School Students. Her future plans in education is to attend UNC at Chapel Hill and major in Mathematics. Miss Walker spends her spare time"^^ cross-stitching, bike riding, and swimming. Kirk Daniel Receives Award Left to right: Rhonda Stallings, Kirk Daniel, Wendy Adams. At an awards banquet held Friday night, Kirk Daniel was presented with a savings bond and a trophy for the school as a second place winner in the district Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. This contest was sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its ladies auxiliary. The theme for this year’s contest was “Youth-America’s Strength”. On the individual school level, the winners were: Kirk Daniel, first place gold medal; Rhonda Stallings, second place silver medal; and Wendy Adams, third place bronze medal. Presenting the awards was Mrs. Doris Gaskins of the New Bern VFW Post 2614. Accepting on behalf of West Craven High School was Kirk Daniel and Mrs. Melba D. Hargett, English Teacher. Register Receives EOP Schoiarship Michelle Register West Craven High School’s renowned bands are hard at work preparing for their upcoming challenges in the Orange Blossom Festival Band Compe tition in Orlando, Florida, April 28-30. All facets of the instrumental program will be put to the test in one of the most demanding contests in the country. Thursday, April 28, will find down easter- "WCHS Band Is Hard ner’s favorite ensem ble, the West Craven Jazz Band, competing in open class compet ition with twenty-two jazz ensembles from across the country. The only North Carolina band entered. West Craven will put their talent against schools from Maine to Florida, and from New York to Oklahoma, in an effort to capture the top honors. Friday, April 29, will be a test of endurance, stamina, precision, and music ianship as the “March-- ing Eagles” of West Craven have the honor of “first off the line” in the famed Tangerine Bowl. Stadium for the most colorful of all contests, the field show competition. With a history of outstanding marching perfor mances over the past several years. West Craven’s “Marching The Craven Chapter of the Education Office Personnel honored Paula Michelle Register April 14, 1983, at their dinner meeting held at Clancy O’Hara’s. Michelle, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl H. Little of Cove City, was the local recipient of the EOP Scholarship. Michelle is an active member of the Future Business Leaders of America. Last year she was reporter and this year she is serving as recording secretary. She has won first place at the Craven Community Typing Contest year before last. This year she won third place in the Advanced Contest. She has also ranked in the top ten percent at the East Carolina Typing Contests. Michelle plans to continue her education at Craven Community College and major in business. Also attending the dinner meeting was Mrs. Shirley Eriksson, business education teacher at West Craven High School. At Work Eagles” are definitely a force to contend with marching bands as from Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky and Okla homa will soon learn. The final contest will be Saturday, April 30, in concert band competition, as thirty- two bands from more than twenty states take to the concert hall for the performances of their lives. Not only are the awards and honors of the concert compe tition at stake, but alsM/' the special sweepstake’*' award, which will be determined by the best band in all events. “This is the culmina tion of years of hard work on the part of our kids and parents,’ says Mr. Joe Sizemore, Director of Bands, “and reflects a commit ment on the part of our school community, the school board, and past and present admini strations.” m
