I P«gt 12, West Craven Highlights,May 5,1983 Jasper Elementary “Treasures The Old Way” The boys and erirls at Jasper spent the week of April 26-29 observing N.C. Heritage Week. This year’s theme was “Treasuring The Old Way” and that was what Jasper students and faculty did. The school started its celebration when the ladies from Jasper community came out to visit, show and tell about when they were young and share stories passed down by their parents an(f grandparents. The Jasper children learned about making homemade butter, old wash days when clothes were rubbed hard on a wash board and boiled in a big iron pot, quilt making which was necessary if you wanted to be warm in winter, how you spend evenings when there is now TV or radio, how to pluck the goose "must hold him the right way or you’d get a bite”, to make a feather bed to sleep on and how to grow and gather your own vegetables, meat and eggs. The children also learned how shoes were mended and ho w you traveled in days long ago. Mrs. Jessie Wiggins, Mrs. Jane Martin, Mre. Ruby Daugherty, Mrs. Christine Wetherington and Mrs. Bessie Daugherty really got the week off to a good start with their antiquesandstories. TTie ladies from Asbury, Mrs. Marietta Sutton, Mrs. Lucille Sutton,Mrs. Myrtle Register, Mrs. Carrie Tippett and Mrs. Connie Daugherty showed the students and faculty old crafts like quilting, candle wicking and other needle work. 'The students observed the actual process of basket weaving and why an egg basket is shaped different from other baskets. her dolls and explained the dress of each doll and related it to our heritage. Keeping in step with treasuring the old way, i was Mr. Dick Hubbard and “The Craven County Cloggers” . The students and faculty became an active part of stepping in time to the old music and were shown and assisted in learning to do the old cloggers step. The students and faculty had a school program in which each class showed what they had learned from our visitors. The program was done in speeches, song, dance and dres.s. On the program were things like “Picking Cotton”, “A parade of Patriots”, “Square Dancing”, “Flags of Our Country”, “The Old North State”, “I Am America”, “Old Jug Band”, and many more. . Following this the school observed Heritage Costume Day,when faculty and students dressed up in The Old Way. To finish up the week the faculty and students brought antiques from their home to show a part of their family heritage, and to enrich the views of “TVeasuring The Old Way”. The students had a great time during the week’s learning process. Mrs. CarrieMiller followed up with her doll collection. This gave the students a good view of the dress customsof long ago.
