The bell was retired from service several years ago when it was replaced with chimes. Unused but not forgotten, it now graces the yard of the church and brings back good memories. Stephen Winstead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Winstead, Sr., will celebrate his sixth birthday on May eth. Many happy returns are wished for Stephen! We’re Proud! Kchard J. Winstead, sonof Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Winstead, Sr., is now hone on 30-day leave and will return to basic training with the U.S. Air Force on May 10th. Richard will first go to By Margaret Creel Lackland Air ForceBase at San Antonio, Texas, and from there he will go to technical school at Shepard Air Force Base in Texas. After that, Richard will serve an eighteen-month tour of duty at Clark Air Force Base in the Phillipines as an Air Passenger Specialist. Please see Richard and! wish him well in his new endeavor. Death Mr. Walter Duane Brown, lifetime resident of Dover, died Tuesday, April 26,1983. Surviving in addition to his widow, Mrs. Gaynelle Brown, are nieces, nephews, and friends. School Affairs Ft. Barnwell Flementary School has a new newspaper—“School Talk”. 1710 title was chosen from many suggested titles offered by students. The selected title was submitted by Miss Alena Snith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ldnwood Smith of Dover. Alena will be rewarded by free ice cream for a week at school. P.T.O. was held Tuesday evening, April 26th. Following a brief business session, a recognition cermony was held for school volunteers who received pins, certificates, and geraniums. Surprised with red carnations were Principal Gilbert, Secretary Jones, all teachers and aides, along with the lunchroom staff. Approximately 76 pers(ms attended. Kindergarten registration was held April 28th with fifty-five registrants and at least six more anticipated. Registration included professional checking of speech, eyes, and teeth. Assembly was held at the school April 30th with Mrs. Floyd’s fourth graders square dancing and Mrs. Carrie Miller displaying and explaining her collection of antique dolls and toys. This program was based on the theme of North Carolina Heritage Week. Mrs. Emma Bell, teacher of one of Ft. Barnwell’s Kindergarten classes, was nominated in October of this school year for “Teacher of the Year”. The nomination itself indicates the high regard and esteem held for the nominee by her peers. Mrs. Bell radiates warmth and patience with the students and is unfaltering in her dedication to her career. You will now find a vegetable garden growing in her classroom sandbox. This is among other evidences of teaching “life” to the young pupils. Mrs. Bell is aptly aided by Mrs. Bland in the classroom. Together, theymake a Grade A team.
