May 21, Fourth Annual Vanceboro Rescue Squad Day The Vanceboro Rescue Squad would like to take this opportunity to announce its Fourth Annual Vanceboro Rescue Day. The entire public is cordially invited to attend a full days schedule of events. Events start with a parade at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Anyone who wishes to participate in the parade please feel free to do so. The line-up will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the New Bern Oil and Fertilizer Co. US. 17 Business, North of Vanceboro. A barbecue pork and chicken dinner will start being served at 11:00 a.m. until. Location will be at the Fire Department. Donation for the dinner will be $3.00. Drinks will be available along with two bake sales. Entertainment is scheduled throughout the day. Attend and support the local talent. Anyone wishing to participate, please do so. A womenless beauty contest will be conducted at the Farm Life Auditorium, beginning at 7:00 p.m. A dance in the gymnasium will follow with the Silver Wings Band providing entertainment. No alcoholic beverages will be allowed on the premises. The Vanceboro Rescue Squad consist of thirty two volunteer members. All members and committees have worked hard to plarfand see the Fourth Annual Rescue Day a success. The Vanceboro Rescue Squad operates on donations it receives from the public. Walter B. Jones said to an audience of over one hundred persons on hand for the dedication of the new Vanceboro-Craven County Public Library building on Sunday, May 15th. The building, donated by Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, N.A. renovated and modified with funds from the State of North Carolina, Craven County and the Town of Vanceboro, is located on the corner of Main Street and College Avenue in Vanceboro. According to Mrs. Christine Hill, Chairman of the Vanceboro-Craven County Public Library Board of trustees, the facility will house over five thousand volumes and will have access to any publications or recordings in the Craven- Pamlico-Carteret Regional Library System. State Librarian David N. McKay indicated that Thank You, Vanceboro! Vanceboro’s first Strawberry Festival was a tremendous success and the thanks go to the citizens of our town. We have proven that we’re not a stodgy community and are quite receptive of growth and good times. The Junior Woman’s Club would like to show its appreciation to the individuals, merchants, churches, and civic organizations who took part in the festival either by sponsoring an event or participating in one. We’ve taken alot of notes and listened to much advice to help make next year’s festival even bigger and better. We hope that those who could not take part this year will make plans now for joining in the fun next Spring. Thanks again for making our first attempt a great success! The Vanceboro-Craven County Public Library houses a special reading room for children and will sponsor monthly story hours and a Summer Reading Program for children in grades one through six. Special film programs, lectures, exhibits and workshops for adults will be held in the facility’s auditorium which has seating capacity for over fifty people. The local library will have access to the North Carolina State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Any person who is blind or visually handicapped can receive free of charge a record player and complete books and current magazines on recordings.
