Joe Sizemore is beginning his eighth year as band
director of the Marching Eagles of West Craven High
School. Sizemore’s moving giant is the Marching
Eagles. They have not become a giant without some
long, hard hours of concentrated effort and
organization by Sizemore and his 60 Booster Club
Parents.
This season will be filled with more work and
concentration by Sizemore and his Marching Eagles
with four big competitions waiting for them. The first
competition takes the band to Charlotte, N.C. for the
Central Carolina Band Contest, second to Western
Alamance’s Band Contest, third to East Carolina
University for the ECU Band Day, and fourth will be
in Cary, N.C. for the Cary Band Day.
In addition to the competition, Sizemore will be
giving of his time and effort to serve the local
communities. His band will participate in four
fireman’s day parades, four Christmas parades, three
competition parades, two concerts at the Edward P.
Blair Auditorium at Vanceboro Farm Life
Elementary School, four other concerts in the county
and performances at home football games.
When asked how he managed to finance all this
activity, he replied, "it takes fund raising by the band
members, support of the band parents and band
boosters, plus support from the business communities
of Craven County.”
This year Sizemore praises his 70 total band
members with 16 in flag corps, 3 in rifle corps, 2
miu'orettes, 4 honor guards, and 2 drum majors. He
feels he has a mature group that really wants West
Craven Marching Eagles to be head and shoulders
above all competition.

their untiring effort to bring a eerviee of mueic to the ettfatena of
Craven County.
Sizemore’s past 8 years have not been silent but have
been filled with band trips to Jamaica, Disney World
in Florida and as Director, N.C. All Star Jazz
ensemble for Jazz Festival. Records set by his
Marching Eagles have been outstanding to Superior
ratings in every part of the music program which
includes Marching Band, Jazz Band and Color Guard.
When asked to recall his most successful campaign,
he stated the 1982 Florida Competitions which
consisted of Marching Eagles receiving excellent
rating in Jazz Band, outstanding rating in Concert
Band, and fourth place Marching Band, “More
important than the ratings was the fact that the
conduct and behavior of 80 band students was above
reproach on all occasions,” said Sizemore.
He also stated that the band has become a very
mature group that accepts their responsibilities in
both musical and social activities.
All this and more is how Joe Sizemore, Director of
the Marching Eagles, West Craven High School’s
moving giant has become known to many of his
students and friends as “Dr. Joe”
Good Luck, “Dr. Joe” keep’em marching!
